Movie Review: Flame of Stamboul (1951) (Reblog)

An alternative title for this blog post could be:  "Welcome to the World of Double Oh!"  Check out Double O Section, a blog for reviews of all things espionage like this 1951 movie.

"After the defeat of Germany at the end of WWII (and the end of the Forties spy classics that went with it) and before James Bond came along, most spy movies were simply crime movies with exotic settings. But as the Cold War warmed up, a few managed to subtly buck the trend in the 1950s, in some ways presaging the direction the genre would go in the Sixties, following 007's explosive cinematic debut. Columbia’s B-programmer Flame of Stamboul, directed by Ray Nazarro and starring the future governor of Hawaii Richard Denning, is surprisingly such a film. ..."

This blog's first post is dated October 2006 and is titled simply "List"; "a Top (double-oh) Seven list of people in the world of fictional spies to keep an eye on."  Interesting list.

As of 2023, it appears this amazing blogger is no longer publishing posts. But the content is still online for reading.  Sharing the link below to the latest post.  Posts date back to 2006.

It's the Easter season. That time of the year when ... the Cadbury Easter Creme Eggs are found in all the stores. I love those treats!

  • Fascinating Facts Recorded in Food History: "With the rise of Christianity in Western Europe, the church adapted many pagan customs and the egg, as a symbol of new life, came to represent the Resurrection. Some Christians regarded the egg as a symbol for the stone being rolled from the sepulchre." (Source:  How the Cadbury Easter Eggs Became a Tradition

Happy Halloween! If You Could Create A Monster (Reblog)

This cool post is a reblog from my fellow blogger and friend who is participating in a writing challenge.  It's perfect for the Halloween holiday!

Here are my responses to the questions, if I were going to create a monster.

What Does The Monster Look Like?

My monster would have to be green. It's a throwback from that old movie The Exorcist where the possessed girl puked up green vomit. That scene got stuck in my brain and ever since then, that puke color green is associated with monsters. Even though it was the devil. In my mind, devil and monster are the same thing!  But SHE would also be attractive or alluring.  That way people would at first want to approach her.

How Big Is The Monster?
Really huge! Way bigger than an ordinary person because it would give the monster a sense of believing SHE is too big to be overcome. Like the American banks.  (Sorry.  Bad joke.)  That way when the humans take her down, it will be a surprise! “Yeah! That's right! Take that! Bet you didn't even see us coming!!”   :)

What Is Unique About The Monster?
The monster would have a combination of traits borrowed from the X-Men mutants (because I'm not very original).  Not sure what combination, but it would be definitely be able to morph or shape-shift.  Although because it's so big, even though it can change its shape, it still wouldn't be so easy to go run and hide.

What Does The Monster Eat?

Humans!

Monsters who eat fruits and veggies don't scare nobody!

Where Does It Sleep?
The monster would have to sleep some place that is either extremely cold or extremely hot, because that would make it more of a challenge for the humans to try to get rid of it while it's resting up for the next day of ravaging the human race.

What would the monsters be called?

My monsters would be called Cannibellas. Well because they're flesh-eating monsters that are also female, and they're not really that ugly or crude to look at. Sort of like the sirens in Greek mythology. They could lure people, especially men.  But because they are so huge, most men would probably run from them!! :)

You Think You Know All About Witches | earthpages.ca (Reblog)

A very informative post:  Witch. Two ideas (or facts, if you prefer) presented that were news to me!

(1) Witches are born witches. Sorcerers get to apply for the job later on in life.

(2) Witch doctors were called witch doctors because people called on them to cure an illness believed to have been caused by a witch.

Black Canada: A Brief History | Abagond (Reblog)

Very much enjoy a good history lesson and this was a good one! Thanks Abagond!

Black Canada: A brief history | Abagond

Unlike the Caribbean and America, slavery was never big in Canada. Instead:

Blacks came to Canada in four main waves:

1. Black Loyalists (1780s, 1810s)

2. Underground Railroad (mostly 1840s-1850s)

3. The Lily White Canada Policy (c. 1896-1962)

4. Caribbean immigration (1960s to present)

The Four Thieves are Natural Remedies ~ Fact or Folklore?

The Four Thieves. Doesn't that sound like the title for a medieval mystery book or something like the Cadfael MysteriesIt's not. It's a blend of clove, cinnamon, eucalyptus, rosemary (with lemon) used to fight infections. (NOTE:  This recipe varies.)

Several years back I accepted an invitation to add links to a Pinterest Group Board which shares information about Natural Remedies and Healthy Lifestyle.  As of today, the board has over 30,000 followers. No surprise really. It seems every other day there is a short advertisement or infomercial on television advising people who had taken a particular prescription medication that they may be entitled to damages and to contact some law firm about it. It's very disheartening. People don't go to a physician so they can sue later for the drugs prescribed to cure their ailments. DUH!

More and more people are turning … or should I say returning … to natural remedies. Not sure if there is a fine line of distinction between holistic healthcare, or alternative medicine, or natural remedies. To me they are all the same in that, i.e. from my point of view, they recommend a cure or possible cure for an ailment that does not result in 20+ other symptoms or health problems that you didn't have before you started taking the treatment and medication.

Vinaigre des quatre voleurs (Vinegar of the Four Thieves)

What People Say About "The Four Thieves"

Some say there was a medication invented by 4 thieves and it helped as a treatment for those suffering from bubonic plague or "The Black Death".  Supposedly the thieves stole from graves of people who had died from the plague but for some reason they never got infected.  (O.o)

The true story or maybe it's just legend … nobody knows for sure … the tale is that four thieves were stealing the corpses of people who had died from the bubonic plague or the Black Death. The authorities finally caught them and wanted to know why they weren't dying. They agreed to tell their “healing secret” but only in exchange for clemency. The tale may be a total fiction but it's a FACT that many people have been using the 4 Thieves essential oil (some call it "vinegar") for centuries.

There is a lot circulating on the Internet about this.
Below are a few information links for you to glean additional details.

Have you ever tried the 4 Thieves Remedy?

Or do you think it's just folklore and the herbs have no use against infection or any practical health application?

Book Review: 'The Man with the Golden Gun' by Ian Fleming

Many people know a lot about Bond movies.

What about the Bond books?
  • "Casino Royale" was the first Bond book published in 1953.

  • After that, Ian Fleming, the creator of James Bond, wrote a book a year. This brilliant writer died of a heart attack in 1964. That's a little over ten years!!

  • Bond novels were published between the years 1953 – 1966.

It is not often that I come across a review of one of the Fleming books. Lots of movie reviews but not book reviews.  Sharing a link to a book review of "The Man with the Golden Gun" from The Friendly Shelf.  It might tempt to want to READ ALL of Fleming's original books. :)

Just survived the “historic” February 2021 winter storm of Texas. (Reblog)

Just survived the “historic” February 2021 winter storm of Texas.

It's the first time the entire state was told to brace for the snow.  We were not ready for it!  My electricity was off for a week,  My water is still not turned on.  We have bottled water for drinking but we can't flush our toilets.  It's awful!  Because I had no electricity, I could not access the Internet.  I finally got access back on Saturday and signed in to sites I was using to make money online and earn cryptocurrencies.  One of my favorite sites is Noise.Cash. You earn Bitcoin Cash at that site. When I was finally able to sign in I shared a music video by Ed Sheeran (https://noise.cash/post/1nv8287k)  I guess because I had not signed in for a few days I did not get any Free Tips.  (Join the site and you'll figure out what the Free Tips are.)  Hope I can get ball rolling again!

On the last day of the storm when the weather started warming up again, my daughter said she heard a bird singing.  It's what woke her up.  Peace and Love everybody!!

Ethnic Names with Figurative Meanings (Reblog)

Reblogging this link because it is a fascinating read!

I just have one question or thought to ponder:
If a group of people in real life truly are ruthless, I’m not so sure you can call it a stereotype. I mean if I called a gang of organized criminals are ruthless and they just happen to all come from the same place, you wouldn’t say I was stereotyping them. Would you?

Can Gandhi find a place in today's Corporate and Management world? | Anas Ebrahem (Reblog)

Gandhian methods, characteristics, ideas, and ideals? Rituals of visionary leaders? Gandhi was a lawyer so finding a place in today’s Corporate and Management world would likely not be difficult for him to do. But his visionary methods of leadership would probably also get him kicked out of that same world! :)

Sharing this excellent post by Anas Ebrahem.

No Coffins – Organic Burial Pods = Recycling's Finest Hour (Reblog)

Organic Burial Pods???!!

I am so on board with this concept!!

Isn’t everyone??

I mean … a Jew or Christian surely can’t object.

It’s totally scriptural.  :)
“In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.”

Forget Coffins - Organic Burial Pods Will Turn Your Loved Ones Into Trees

The idea of coming full circle and returning whence we came is captured perfectly by this beautiful new burial method developed in Italy. The Capsula Mundi project by designers Anna Citelli and Raoul Bretzel has developed an organic, biodegradable burial capsule that will turn the deceased's body into nutrients for a tree that will grow out of their remains.

Trees Deserve Respect

Ailanthus altissima is an ornamental tree grown mainly for shade and also for its leaves which the silkworm feeds on. Sounds prettier when it is called by its unscientific name: "tree of heaven". The acacia thrives in the wilderness of Paran (the location of several historic events in the Bible).

So the voice in my head says: 'Why are there so many different trees? There should be one tree that bears all of my favorite fruit! Why does there have to be an apple tree, an orange tree, a mango tree, etc.?' OK. There was no voice in my head that said that.

Most Beautiful Islands: Croatia-Dalmatian Islands (REBLOG)

So very pleased to share this link about the Croatia-Dalmatian Islands. Found the World's Most Beautiful Islands blog a couple of years back. It appears that neither the blog or the Facebook page has been updated since 2012, but no matter as the information provided about the most beautiful islands in the world is enough to whet your appetite and make you hunger and thirst for more. Never been to Dalmatia but one reference to this place in the New Testament and ever since it has been on my wish list of  "Places I'd Like to Go.

Most Beautiful Islands: Croatia-Dalmatian Islands

(Link previously supplied for reblog had to be replaced as domain name was not renewed.  See below.)

When the Apostle Paul* was preparing for his execution in Rome, he sent final instructions and words of encouragement to Timothy, a young man he referred to as his “son in the faith”. He told him what he expected of him and what needed to be done to carry on the missionary efforts. In what is believed to be one of his final letters to the young minister, he made mention of his “other son”, Titus. He said that Titus was on his way to Dalmatia to continue spreading the gospel message. Just that one mention of the place and my heart was captivated.

Movie Review: The Judge (2014) | Robert Downey, Jr. and Robert Duvall (Reblog)

No matter what the title of the film is if you say the name of Robert Duvall, that makes my “Movies to Watch” list. It would be hard for this movie, The Judge(2014) to be bad (my opinion) since it has two powerhouse actors, both named Robert.

Robert Downey Jr. of Iron Man and Sherlock Holmes fame won me over with his portrayal of Charlie Chaplin.

Robert Duvall should be introduced as "The One and Only" or "The Incomparable".  If he were British, we'd probably be calling Sir Robert Duvall.  Mr. Duvall has been one of my favorite actors ever since “To Kill a Mockingbird”.  He wasn't the leading star in that movie either!  Gregory Peck may have won the Academy Award for "Best Actor" but Duvall's character was memorable and his performance was unforgettable.

Very happy to share the link to a movie review of "The Judge" by Cynthia Sylvestermouse.

She begins her post by stating:  "Rarely do I go to the theater to see a movie and come away feeling like I actually saw a movie worth viewing. It is especially rare for both my husband and myself to equally rave over a movie. ..."

In other words ... That was a gooooood movie!

Downey may have been given the top billing in this movie, but in my opinion, Duvall is the man!  :)

History is a topic that almost anybody can write about, if they know what they're talking about, and make it extremely interesting and informative for other people (like me) who have no knowledge of the facts whatsoever.

One of the blogs I like or follow is The Freelance History Writer, published by history lover, Ms. Susan Abernethy.  She started out writing about women's history and then decided to diversify.

Ms. Abernathy's love for this subject was recognized and appreciated by a reputable non-profit organization, and she was asked to write a guest post for them. She holds the honor of being the first guest blogger for Ancient History Encyclopedia. The title of her guest post is Scota: Mother of the Scottish People.  At her own blog this post was tagged “DNA analysis”.

  • Do you know who discovered that DNA could be categorized into 7 basic groups?
  • What do you know about "Lia Fail"?

This historical adventure really took me places.
Thanks Ms. Abernathy!  :)
