Foodie Friday : Tip of the Week : How to Use Garlic from Kevin Ashton

Do you know how black garlic is made?

In one of my previous posts, garlic was listed among the "sexy spices". That's why it's a pleasure to share this Tip of the Week: How to Use Garlic by Kevin Ashton, who recently started following my foodie business page on Google Plus. He does business under the name "wannabetvchef" and publishes several food and food-related blogs.  His post is very informative.  

Memories are Blessings | My Hometown ~ Miami, Florida

"Count your Blessings" is a familiar Christian hymn that encourages people not to focus on the negatives and count all the things they can be thankful for; all the good things in life they've been blessed to experience. Try it.  Especially when you're about to end a year and start a new year.  It's a great time to reflect on the blessings you're counting.

Getting close now to my threescore an ten (70 years, the average life expectancy). When I count my blessing over the years, the list has grown and grown and grown. There are a lot of add-ons. But the list always includes one great memory from my childhood.
Good food!

Growing up in Miami, Florida, there was good eating all around me. My main sources for everyday meals were: my mother's cooking, church dinners prepared by faithful sisters, and a sweet little old gray-haired lady who owned and operated a restaurant around the corner from my house called "Mom's Cafe". I never knew her name because everybody called her "mom". All of these women really knew how to serve up the love! Huge plates of pigeon peas and rice, potato salad, collard greens, black eye peas, fried chicken; sweet potato pie for dessert.


As I grew into a teenager and young adult, started working part-time while pursuing my education; had a little pocket change so occasionally I could go out to eat. Downtown Miami and particularly Calle Ocho (8th Street), there were spots where you could chow down on delicious Cuban food: sweet fried plantains, black beans and rice, vaca frita, or a toasty Cuban sandwich. Kosher food delicatessens and restaurants run by the Jews on Miami Beach were the best! The soups, sandwiches, and desserts were outrageous! That was just lunch! Of course, no major city is complete if you can't find good Chinese food. Miami is a major city with places that have award-winning Chinese cuisine.


This book cover is from the 1993 publication but it reminds me of my hometown.

I moved away from Miami at the end of 1986 and have never returned. But even though I haven't been back, I'll bet the food has only gotten better!!

Published an article about a proposed solution to the "problem" of illegal immigration in the United States via HUBPages.com.  For the life of me, can't understand why everybody isn't on board with it!  Isn't the temptation of Mexican cuisine a persuasive enough argument?!  THINK "homemade fresh chorizo".  That's worth coming to an agreement, isn't it?

Cake Bake: Stewart versus Esteves - Throw Down!

American TV personality Martha Stewart is the most famous housekeeper / homemaker in the world. I would describe her as a “Phenomenal Businesswoman par Excellence”. Watched one of her shows one time and she was actually teaching her audience how to clean a dirty greasy frying pan! This woman took the mundane chores of housekeeping and homemaking on a Star Trek journey and boldly went places no woman had ever gone before. To the bank!!!

• Martha Stewart's net worth at one time was reported at $300 million, per celebritynetworth.com. (Figured that must be an old report. So fished some more.)
• A 2011 article published by abcnews.go.com, reported that Forbes.com reported her net worth at $638 million. (That's probably understated too, as of 2015.)

Anyway, getting to my real point - If you're not into baking from scratch like Martha Stewart, are you aware of the wonderful things that can be done with a cake mix? Isabelle Esteves shares her tips on how to enhance a basic cake mix.*

Food History : Burger King Halloween Burgers Only in Japan

Food Fact:  Premium Kuro Burger: newly introduced for Halloween 2012

The debate about Who Invented the Burger has been ongoing for years and the claims are still unsettled. Answers.com is loaded with answers.  

Burgers are a favorite food around the world. But the image of the black burger is not really making me salivate.  May or may not on an official Andrew Zimmern’s list for bizarre foods.  Don’t know.  Didn’t check.  But – no offense intended – it made my list for ugliest food I’ve ever seen!  However, to celebrate the fun of Halloween, perhaps I could be persuaded to taste it … IF … someone bought me a round trip ticket to Japan. :)

Burger King Halloween Burgers –  BK’s Halloween menu, available only in Japan.  Westerners did not immediately warm up to the idea of a black burger.

That was then.  This is now.

Perhaps the blog post title should be revised to
"Burger King Halloween Burgers Were Once Only in Japan". 

It's 2017 and black food is becoming a trend.
