Entertainment : Bollywood Movie Review : Karam (2005)

It never fails, no matter what online social blogging or writing community I join, the discussion always gets around to “favorites”. Favorite song. Favorite movie. Favorite book. And then, of course, the “faves” can vary. Favorite song from a movie. Favorite book adapted to film. Favorite soundtrack to a movie. On and on and on.

My husband introduced me to foreign films and in particular, to Bollywood films. If you watch Hindi movies you know that there are literally thousands (possibly even millions) of them with all kinds of wonderful music and songs. There is this one movie which stars Bollywood beauty Priyanka Chopra and Bollywood hunk John Abraham, where she sings the most beautiful haunting melody. Heard that song the first time and it hooked me! Instant favorite!! To me it was the best vocal performance ever by Ms. Chopra.

That's it. That's my review. This movie is a love story. It is intense! The bad guys are really bad. When the bad guys confront each other, you're happy you're not stuck in the middle. Your heart bleeds for every innocent victim that has the misfortune to cross paths with them. So when a bad guy is married to a good girl … ______. If I fill out the blank, it'll spoil the movie for those who may not have seen it. Even if you don't have time to watch the film, at least take a few minutes to listen to Ms. Chopra's performance of a song that is definitely on my favorites list.

The 2005 film is “Karam”.

The song is “Tinka Tinka”.

Once Upon a Time Foreign Movies in the USA Were Not Easy to Find. But Now ...

When I was a kid in Miami, Florida (late 50s), the closest thing to foreign films was the Spanish channels, which I couldn’t really watch because I didn’t understand the language.  But now there’s YouTube, Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Instant Video, etc.  Unlimited films to choose from with English subtitles or English dubbed.  So many that it is often hard to choose.  Isn't that great?

Movies are mainly for entertainment, but they also teach people about the world and broaden a person’s perspectives or views about life. For this reason, I heart foreign movies.

When I was a kid, foreign films were nonexistent in my world. When I got married and started having children, date night for my spouse and me was him going to the video stores and renting movies for us to watch over the weekend. Sometimes, in the interest of being economical, I’d go to the local library and check out videos.

My late husband used to be a foreigner. He was born in the Bahamas. Then he became an American citizen. But he really enjoyed foreign flicks (i.e. non-American movies). These films can be every entertaining as long as the English subtitles aren’t too hard to read. We enjoy the European films but watch more Asian films – mostly Chinese and Indian. We like intense martial arts fight scenes, but also movies that cover the history of China.

As far as Indian movies – i.e., Bollywood, Collywood, Hindi, Tamil, etc. – you can always count on not only a pretty good plot to follow and great music as well. Plus, we learn Indian history and culture. Lately, we’ve been exposing ourselves to Korean dramas. WHOA!! There is a lot going on in other parts of the world, according to these films.
