Exercises to Train Your Brain (Per FastCompany)

I appreciate the advice in this article, but I won't be following Numbers 6 and 7. I'm not going to learn how to juggle or how to play chess. I have managed to live through six decades without these skills, so I'll continue to move forward in that direction.

Interesting facts about FastCompany.com / Fast Company:

  1. Founding and Original Mission
Fast Company was founded in November 1995 by Alan Webber and Bill Taylor, both former editors at Harvard Business Review, along with publisher Mortimer Zuckerman. From the beginning, the magazine—and the web presence—focused on how business was changing due to innovation, design, technology, and new management styles.
It became one of the fastest‑growing business magazines in the U.S.—it took just six years for Fast Company to reach a circulation of about 725,000. Comparatively, other long‑standing business magazines took many more decades to hit similar numbers.

  2. Changes in Ownership and Valuation Over Time

    • In 2000, Fast Company was sold by Zuckerman to Gruner + Jahr (part of Bertelsmann) for US$550 million

    • Later, in 2005, it was acquired by Mansueto Ventures. The purchase price then was much lower ($35 million), reflecting changed market conditions and the aftermath of the dot‑com bubble burst.

  3. Fast Company has won significant industry recognition:

    • In 2014, it was named Magazine of the Year by the American Society of Magazine Editors. It has also received praise and awards for its design, innovation, and for being ahead of trends in business media.

    • The company has been increasingly leaning on its digital presence, events, and recognition programs in addition to its print magazine. (FIPP)

    • In September 2022, fastcompany.com was subject to a security breach: the website was compromised, and push notifications sent to Apple News users included racist and obscene messages. The site was taken offline for about eight days.

    • More recently, in 2025, Fast Company tightened its paywall and reserved some daily stories for paying subscribers, citing volatility in web traffic and the need to build a more direct connection with readers.
