Entertainment: Movies and TV : War Movies From the 60s

Are you a John Wayne fan? If so, I sure hope you will not feel disappointed when I say that I do not share your admiration. I am not a John Wayne fan at all. It sounds un-American, but it’s the truth. I never really liked John Wayne movies, particularly when he portrayed a person in the military because he never served. Some want to imply or hint that he was a draft dodger. I would feel uncomfortable taking it that far. Besides, many think that the roles he played as a person serving in the armed forces of the United States were great for the morale of the real soldiers. So dissing him for not serving would be kind of unfair because boosting the morale of a soldier far away from home is an admirable service and an act of patriotism. At any rate, this article is not about Mr. Wayne. It is about war movies. Read on.

When trying to compile a listing of war movies that left a mark in my memory, since I grew up during the Vietnam era, The Green Berets (1968), made my initial list. However, it was subsequently eliminated.

The Green Berets, which starred John Wayne, is about the war in Vietnam. It was taken off my list because it was difficult to recall any memorable movie quotes.  On the other hand, the words in the theme song were memorable.

Song Lyrics:
“Put silver wings on my son’s chest. These are wings of America’s best. One hundred men will test today. But only three, will wear the green beret.”

The Green Berets (Warner Home Video)

Seven (7) movies did make the cut (by my standards) for memorable military flicks.
“Some people have a sixth sense. He has a sixth, a seventh and an eighth.”
Can you guess which war movie that quote is from?  Answer.

Greek Mythology: The Harpies | Soul Snatchers Versus Soul Savers

I enjoy the study of mythology.  Not just Greek and Roman mythology but legends, folklore, and myths from all around the world.  The study affords me the opportunity to contrast and compare those beliefs to the teachings of Christianity.

For this discussion, I am sharing the results of a quick study about the harpy.  Are you familiar with the harpy (or harpies, plural)?

The word “harpies” means “snatchers”.  They were known as the hounds of Zeus.  In Greco-Roman mythology, the harpies were monstrous bird-like creatures with a woman’s face. Believers thought these creatures acted at the behest of the gods, carried out acts of vengeance, and were snatchers of human souls.

In the earliest accounts, the Harpies were not monstrous—they were simply spirits who represented windy or stormy weather, and they were depicted as beautiful young women with wings. Over time, however, they developed into terrifying beasts. They had long, fair hair and the faces and upper bodies of women, but the wings, tails, legs, and claws of birds of prey, with sharp talons made of metal. They were always ravenously hungry, and would steal food or even eat their victims before carrying away their souls. The Harpies were repulsive to look at, and they spread filth everywhere they went. They stank so much that whatever they touched gave off a terrible smell.”

By contrast, in Christianity, harpies are not to be feared because they don’t exist.  Christians are taught to only revere and fear The One Who has the power to destroy humans, both their body and their soul.  Believers know that Jesus Christ acted according to the will of His Father; taught there is only one true God, not gods; and preached the good news of faith, hope, and love for the purpose of saving souls.

Gift Giving? Need Ideas? Candles Are Gifts That Are Seldom RE-Gifted

Candles have always been a great gift idea. Right?

Candles are seldom refused and rarely, if ever, re-gifted.

  • Your child needs a gift for their teachers. Candle!
  • Can’t think of what to get your mom for Mother's Day or her birthday? Candle!
  • A boss needs to think of an inexpensive corporate gift for his or her employees – which, of course, he or she can write off as a business expense for tax purposes. Candles!

(Pssst … Paperweights are also a good idea. If interested, click here. If not, let’s stay focused and stick with the candles.)

I have heard that the Yankee Candles have become an extremely popular gift item? No surprise. They are uber wonderful because they come in so many fragrances. Spiced pumpkin, cinnamon, roses, vanilla, jasmine, lilac blossoms, etc. They even come in votives.

Ask me which scent would be my favorite? Balsam & Cedar.

Why? A personal affinity towards anything that lends itself to biblical times.

Cedar trees were utilized by King Solomon in the building of the temple and are a symbol of strength and beauty.

As for balsam? Well! Balsam is for priests, kings, and … everyday people, like you and me.

Fashion and Style: The Little Black Dress is a Wardrobe Essential

Everybody knows – or at least every woman knows – that her wardrobe is incomplete without the little black dress. Everybody knows – male or female – that people look to the current First Lady in the United States White House as a fashion icon, symbol, or somebody everybody else wants to dress like. Whenever she steps onto the scene, the women all want to see what she is wearing. Click! Click! Click! The sound of all the cameras flashing. It was that way with Michelle Obama and it was the same way with the late Jackie Kennedy. Being honest, those are the only two first ladies that had a fashion sense or a fashion flair (according to me). The other nice ladies, although very supportive of their spouses, were just not as noticeable. Feel free to disagree. But do not expect to change my opinion. The two first ladies who get A++ for being super stylish? Jackie Kennedy and Michelle Obama. Moving on to the next topic.

The next topic is eShakti. Ever heard of them? A clothing line; apparel for women. Best little black dresses ever!!! Shades of Mrs. O and Mrs. K. Also very affordable. They have dresses in other colors too and you will instantly fall in love with all of them! Skirts and blouses as well. Classy. Elegant. Cotton. Retro. Easy care. Liz Taylor glamorous. Most importantly, they flatter your figure. They customize apparel to your height, size, and style and deliver in 14 business days. Try one of them on and there is no doubt in my mind that when you look in the mirror, you will be thinking: “Oh yeah! Looking good!”

See here is the thing. The style is like vintage 40s and 50s. Or maybe 20s and 30s. I do not go back that far. But if you go back far enough, and can remember “when the lion roared” just before a great movie came on – you knew that you would probably see some glamorous women wearing gorgeous clothing made by a top fashion designer, and you would sigh with envy because you know you could not afford whatever they were wearing. Unless you had a mother who was a dressmaker. My mom would watch movies with me and go: “Oh I can make that dress easy. Cost me just $5.” Seriously. She would and she could!

Maybe you did or do not have a mother who was/is a skilled seamstress. These days it is very convenient to shop online for all of your fashion needs. So check out the affordable custom clothing available at eShakti. The retro-style conjured all kinds of wonderful memories and made me think that if I were the First Lady, it would be one of my favorite places to shop.

Anyway, enough with my jibber jabber. Take a look at the selection below. If you are not looking for a black dress, no problems, as these styles come in several different colors. Of course, once you decide on the dress, you know what comes next. Shoes and accessories!

Entertainment: Books: Biographies of J.R.R. Tolkien

Anyone who has done even scant research on John Ronald Reuel Tolkien (1892 – 1973) knows that even though he was a very private man, there is no shortage of biographical information about this famous British writer and medievalist. Hardcover, paperback, digital and audiobooks, letters, and other materials abound. His son, Christopher Tolkien (1924 - 2020) was is extremely protective of the legacy of his father and has only ever authorized one official biography. His father is highly respected as a literary hero and a mythmaker, and he wanted to keep it that way!

Understandable, however, that did not stop others from publishing their unauthorized unofficial versions. (Even moi! I tried my hand at publishing an unauthorized biographical sketch.) These unapproved life stories (see listing below.) are just as appreciated by Tolkien fans, as the approved biography written by Humphrey Carpenter. Furthermore, the commercialization of  “all things Tolkien” may have started with the success of the “Lord of the Rings” books, but when these works were adapted to film, Tolkien fever infected the masses around the world. A loyal Tolkien-ite can not only build their own personal library, but can purchase puzzles, games, collectibles, and more!!

Entertainment: My Picks for Saturday Afternoon at the Movies: A Triple Feature

There was a dark period in the history of mankind when witch-hunting was the order of the day. It began with official approval from Pope Innocent VII in 1484 and continued until around the 17th century when it reached its climax in England, Scotland, and America.

But it’s the 21st century. We’re all much more civilized and intelligent than those people were back then. Aren’t we? Nobody is going to whip us up into frenzied mania and have us pointing a finger of accusation at someone, torturing a confession out of them, and still putting them to death for being a witch!

The past is in the past.

Fortunately, my only exposure to witches and witchcraft was and is wearing a costume on Halloween or watching the Wizard of Oz. When I was growing up, we (my siblings and I) watched this iconic film once every year.  But now anybody can watch The Wizard of Oz on DVD or Amazon Instant Video. Can you believe it has been 75+ years? The movie was released in 1939. Listening to Judy Garland sing “Over the Rainbow” never gets old. It might be a fun idea to plan a Saturday afternoon or evening watching all 3 films:

That's right!  A triple feature!

My Favorite Power Quote 4 (3, 2, and 1)

Isn't this like one of the best motivational quotes you've ever heard?  Something new, just recently started and as you can see by the post title this is the fourth quote added the collection.  The other three were shared at my other blogs.

Gifts for the Tolkien Enthusiast

One might think that I got the idea of power quotes from a site like BrainyQuote, which is a great site if you need to find a quote by a famous or notable person very quickly.  But that's not how it came to me.  You see being a student of the Bible, you have what are called "memory verses".  Particular scriptures that you want to memorize and be able to recall when needed.  Well there used to be a religious publication (apologies for not being able to remember the name) and they had something referred to as "power verses".  A memory verse that gave you power!  It's like a "Get thee behind me Satan" verse you use to thwart those who try to trouble you.  Yeah.  You think of the verse instead of punching the person in the face or yelling at them.  Don't know if this is a technique used in anger management classes, but it works for me!

At any rate, taking the idea a step further, because quote collecting is my hobby and blogging is my home business endeavor, the two were joined in marriage and so far the union seems to be quite useful!

My Favorite Power Quote 3

Started collecting these types of quotes wherever I find them.  This one is Number 3. was grabbed from Facebook. “Worry is a misuse of imagination.”
