My Best of Halloween Posts on G+ - Superstitions

"Another Halloween superstition occurred at midnight. That was the time when boys and girls went into the garden blindfolded and each pulled a cabbage (some claimed it was kale runts). Supposedly, the form of the cabbage head and its stalk denoted the physical peculiarities of the person’s future husband or wife. There was also a belief that if the roots tasted sweet or sour, it reflected the future spouse’s temperament."

Fun fact about holiday traditions during the 19th century gleaned from a link shared via Google Plus by Geri Walton.

Glad she shared.  Also glad it's not true!  ☺

Not related but of significant note, Ms. Walton is the author of "Marie Antoinette’s Confidante: The Rise and Fall of the Princesse de Lamballe". Just an FYI.

Become Bruce Lee or the 10th Doctor Who for Halloween

Thought people might have trouble deciding on a Halloween costume to wear. Especially guys. Tried to make it an easy choice.

Can you get any easier if you say:

  • Choose between Bruce Lee or

  • Doctor Who (The Tenth One, my favorite).

I could not believe the initial reactions and feedback.

Aren't the lines clearly drawn?

It would be easy for me to pick. I'd be both!!
That's right! I'd figure out a way to wear both costumes!

For Halloween 'Become' Bruce Lee vs For Halloween 'Become' the 10th Dr. Who

JACK AND DIANE (2012): Saturday night movie pick? Watch at your own risk.

OK. OK! I get it! It's an awful movie. I'm convinced. Not gonna watch it. Not into horror movies anyway. Growing up, every Saturday AFTER 11 o' clock was the night to watch creepy scary horror movies. It wasn't a rule of my parents. It was a television programming decision made by our local stations that we all abided by. These days, occasionally, like if it's the Halloween season, a horror flick will be on my watch list. If a thorough critique and review of a horror film is needed, this is was my GO TO blog, "Written in Blood". Everything you need to know about horror films and some stuff you didn't even know you needed to know! Glad to have this blog to help me decide whether my time will be wasted or not. :)  Saturday night movie pick?  Watch at your own risk.

The blog publisher's review of this film was sort of like my review of NOAH (2014).  That movie was awful!  So bad you feel compelled to warn viewers in advance.

* * Apologies.  The blog owners decided to unpublish his blog.  Movie is available on Amazon Video, if interested.

Saving grace for the viewer?  Hmmm? On the plus side, neither movie was bad enough to ruin the joy of munching on a bowl or a box of buttered popcorn

My Pick for Best of Halloween Spooky Scary Stories

In the mood for a really spooky scary story for #Halloween?

Or do you just want to know what human beings are capable of doing to other human beings?

This story is about an entire family who had an insatiable craving for consuming human flesh. The incidents happened circa 1400 A.D. They were finally brought to justice and executed.

Executed??!!  Can't believe they didn't have a lawyer to plead insanity as their defense. For sure, they were all basket cases!!

Halloween Movie : MANIAC COP (1988) ~ What's on Your Watch List?

Definitely out of the loop on this one. There's a Maniac Cop one, two and three, and I have yet to watch the first one!  It's a "late '80s urban horror/action" film and for me, the idea of a crazy cop is for real scary!  It's not at the top of my watch list.  But it is on my list.

Do you have a watch list of movies for Halloween?

My Best of Halloween Posts on G+ - Gothic Garden

A new trend in gardening is creating a gothic garden with mystical garden statues, and black and deep purple flowers.

In lieu of traditional pastel or brightly colored flowers, a gothic garden is becoming popular and these black (or dark purple) flowers are often included in the mix.

Happy Halloween! “Trick or Treat for UNICEF!” #BeScaryGood

When I was young there was a campaign/advertisement that came on television every year around or near the time to celebrate Halloween. It went like this: Children would knock on the door and when the neighbor opened their door, instead of asking for candy the kids would shout:

Trick or Treat for UNICEF!

UNICEF logo
The campaign began in 1950.  Certainly made an imprint in my mind. The idea was to get people to donate to the cause of helping children all over the world. This October 2017 will be the 67th year. I liked the idea THEN and like it NOW. Sharing this precious gem found via the UNICEF Tumblr blog. No doubt there are all kinds of ways one can contribute to such a worthy cause.

Books, pencils, playgrounds, crayons – not all children will have access to these things going back to school. But they will be exposed to violence: http://uni.cf/1AbEGqt

Bless the children always.  Have to keep this charity work on the radar.  Always embrace an opportunity, especially when it's a holiday, and find a means to extend charity to those less fortunate. Trick or Treat for UNICEF!!

Food History : Burger King Halloween Burgers Only in Japan

Food Fact:  Premium Kuro Burger: newly introduced for Halloween 2012

The debate about Who Invented the Burger has been ongoing for years and the claims are still unsettled. Answers.com is loaded with answers.

Burgers are a favorite food around the world. But the image of the black burger is not really making me salivate.  May or may not on an official Andrew Zimmern’s list for bizarre foods.  Don’t know.  Didn’t check.  But – no offense intended – it made my list for ugliest food I’ve ever seen!  However, to celebrate the fun of Halloween, perhaps I could be persuaded to taste it … IF … someone bought me a round trip ticket to Japan. :)

Burger King Halloween Burgers –  BK’s Halloween menu, available only in Japan.  Westerners did not immediately warm up to the idea of a black burger.

That was then.  This is now.

Perhaps the blog post title should be revised to
"Burger King Halloween Burgers Were Once Only in Japan"

It's 2017 and black food is becoming a trend.

Witches vs Secret Societies: Threat or Real Threat?

In Judaism, during Bible times, the practice of witchcraft was forbidden. Not just witches, but sorcerers, soothsayers, fortune-tellers (psychics), etc. Those who engaged in such activities were counted as nothing more than deceivers with evil intent. The practitioners claimed that they had supernatural powers and some sort of direct connection to the gods or God, which they did not have. Because they dared to say that they could communicate as a medium or intercessor and could convey messages to and from the Divine, knowing full well that they had no such powers or capabilities, how could their intentions have been pure and honest? There was no doubt that their aim or purpose was to defraud another person or do even worse than that. For this reason, the punishment for practicing witchcraft was severe. (That's my understanding.)

During the first century, converts to Christianity, openly and publicly renounced the practices of witchcraft, sorcery, etc. - referred to as "curious arts" - and professed that their faith was the only power needed to overcome evil and to commune with the Creator.
