American Presidents During My Lifetime: Ronald Reagan

POTUS Dots from Eisenhower to Kennedy to Johnson and Nixon to Ford and Carter to …

* * *

40th POTUS, Ronald Reagan (1981 – 1988)

Mr. Reagan truly desired or aspired to be the president. He spent years trying to accomplish this objective. Finally. One day. It happened. He got himself elected. He was inaugurated on the very same day I started working for the United States Customs Service, now known as ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement).
He wasn't too keen on funding health, education and welfare or social programs like that. Just because Jesus said “The poor ye have always with you”, that doesn't mean those in poverty should be a priority budget item.

He wanted to privatize functions like the postal service.

He was really enthusiastic about space and defense programs. But when the Iran Contra Affair occurred, he told the American people he didn't know a thing about it. He has since departed this life but - if speaking honestly - I was never fully convinced he didn't know. Too late now to split hairs over it.

All of America is glad - whether we agree with his decisions or not - that he survived an attempt on his life. The shooter wasn't even politically motivated. The idiot guy was just trying to impress a girl. A girl he didn't even know! God spared Mr. Reagan's life. Amen!

That's my recall/wrap-up of MY opinions and views of Reaganomics and his policies.

American Presidents During My Lifetime: Gerald Ford and Jimmy Carter

POTUS Dots from Eisenhower  to Kennedy  to Johnson and Nixon to …
  • Similar to my previous post, combining these next two POTUS Dots also.
* * *

38th POTUS, Gerald Ford (1974 – 1977)

Served as Vice-President with Nixon and was then elected as President. He pardoned Nixon and some of US were not too happy about that. The overall sentiment went something like:
  • Dirty rotten crooked scoundrel politicians!! Q)Y*X}{@#!R{(TB# … Good old boys network! … (&_R #c ybB6T-!!& &% … etc.

Nothing else memorable to report about this administration. Either it was a quiet time or he was a quiet man. Not in the spotlight very often. (O.o)

* * *

39th POTUS, Jimmy Carter (1977 – 1981)

What with Watergate Scandal, Spiro WHO?, and Ford WHO?, and then a Presidential pardon after all of the uproar … the American people started asking a different type of “WHO” question:

  • “WHO out there is an honest politician?”

Someone suggested:
  • “Well there is this peanut farmer who goes to church every Sunday.”

Americans are like: “Fine! Vote him in!”

After all, he can't be any worse than a dishonest politician. Right?

The mild-mannered Mr. Carter encouraged energy conservation; and he was (and still is) a principled man of peace who succeeded in getting two political leaders of countries – not known for being BFFs – Israel and Egypt - to actually shake hands and publicly agree on a peace accord. Regardless of what actually happened after that, he meant it for good .

American Presidents During My Lifetime: Lyndon Johnson and Richard Nixon

POTUS Dots from Eisenhower to Kennedy to ...

  • Will have to combine these next two POTUS Dots. Not a lot to extract by way of recollection for one of them.
* * *

36th POTUS, Lyndon Johnson (1963 – 1969)

As Vice-President for John F. Kennedy, he had to step into the shoes of the slain President and pick up where he left off, continuing to move America forward. My memories of this administration are dominated by all the public protests against the Vietnam War , and by a lot of really good music during that time period containing song lyrics inspired by the various significant political issues of the day. Want to hear the songs of that generation just listen to the some of the background music for the movie Forrest Gump, which starred Tom Hanks.

Of course, my memories include the Civil Rights Movement . It's a perfect day to mention this important milestone in America's history because the date of this post - January 18, 2016 - is also being celebrated as MLK Day, the birthday of Martin Luther King, notable Civil Rights activist.

* * *

37th POTUS, Richard Nixon (1969 – 1974)

The Watergate Scandal and Spiro WHO? Remember people saying that about the man Nixon chose to serve with him as Vice-President. Spiro T. Agnew. One would think that with a name like that a person would try to do something more memorable than avoid paying their income taxes. At any rate, Gerald Ford was chosen to take Agnew's place as VEEP and still people kept asking: WHO?? Seems nobody knew him either! (O.o)

See related and more detailed blog post on Nixon.

American Presidents During My Lifetime: John F. Kennedy

Continuing to follow the dots on my timeline which started with Eisenhower

* * *

35th POTUS, John F. Kennedy (1961 – 1963) - What do I recall?

The grown folks around me sure thought he was a good POTUS. Didn't know much but saw no reason to disagree with them. Have always believed that this man would have been one of the best presidents. But we will never know as he was cut down by an assassin's bullet or bullets. To this day, the identity of his murderer or murderers have never been confirmed. But the day he was shot is etched in my memory forever. People – the adults, that is, in my neighborhood were showing a range of emotions: sorrow, shock, despair, anger, dread. My older sister made a scrapbook of newspaper clippings – everything she could find about JFK. Sadly, don't know what happened to it. Wish I had kept it. Its historical value would have been priceless.

Kennedy's assassination completely changed my understanding of this thing called “politics” in America, and in the world. Politics is dangerous! Not only dangerous but confusing. To want to get rid of a bad leader – like a ruthless dictator or a really cruel monarch - that's understandable. Not saying that's the right thing to do. But to kill a good leader? That is so clearly and obviously wrong. WHY?? Does this mean the good really do die young?? (O.o)

Thoughts from a child's heart.

Next two POTUS Dots:  Lyndon B. Johnson and Richard M. Nixon

American Presidents During My Lifetime: Dwight D. Eisenhower

It's 2016. Another election year in the United States of America. Thought this might be a good time to look back. For those who may be unfamiliar with the process, American presidents are voted in by the people. Although if you believe in the gospel according to Senator Bernie Sanders, that's a myth. Big Money runs this country. It runs the campaign process. It runs the Congress. This is not America. This is the Roman Empire.

But let's just say - for purposes of my posts - the ideal democracy does exist and the real power does rest with the GAP (general American public) and the people do elect their leaders in America. Here's how it works. Leaders are elected. They get to serve for no more than two terms, 4 years each, 8 years top. Then they leave and they can't come back! Most citizens, like me, are OK with this arrangement. Additionally, most citizens, like me, will probably live through about 8 to 10 presidents in their lifetime.

This is my intro to a series of posts that will be published where I take a look back at the presidential DOTS on my timeline. Won't be drawing from what is written about these fearless leaders in the history books. Just going to try to see what can be drawn from my memory.

* * *

Beginning with the 34th POTUS, Dwight D. Eisenhower, who served from 1953 to 1961. You could say my DOT is on his timeline since, my birth occurred during his time of service, close to the end of the year 1955.

Only thing in my memory about this administration was that his daughter got married. No. That's not a political act. It's not politics at all. But … back in my time, children were taught not to speak when grown folks were talking and only thing I can recall grown folks talking about was the fact that his daughter was getting married.

Guess that's an indicator that times during 1953 to 1961 weren't too too bad. (???)

It's a guess from a person who was between the ages of: Newborn to 6 years. (O.o)

That's it! Not much extracted. Next post? Next POTUS DOT?  John F. Kennedy

Happy Halloween! If You Could Create A Monster (Reblog)

This cool post is a reblog from my fellow blogger and friend who is participating in a writing challenge.  It's perfect for the Halloween holiday!

Here are my responses to the questions, if I were going to create a monster.

What Does The Monster Look Like?

My monster would have to be green. It's a throwback from that old movie The Exorcist where the possessed girl puked up green vomit. That scene got stuck in my brain and ever since then, that puke color green is associated with monsters. Even though it was the devil. In my mind, devil and monster are the same thing!  But SHE would also be attractive or alluring.  That way people would at first want to approach her.

How Big Is The Monster?
Really huge! Way bigger than an ordinary person because it would give the monster a sense of believing SHE is too big to be overcome. Like the American banks.  (Sorry.  Bad joke.)  That way when the humans take her down, it will be a surprise! “Yeah! That's right! Take that! Bet you didn't even see us coming!!”   :)

What Is Unique About The Monster?
The monster would have a combination of traits borrowed from the X-Men mutants (because I'm not very original).  Not sure what combination, but it would be definitely be able to morph or shape-shift.  Although because it's so big, even though it can change its shape, it still wouldn't be so easy to go run and hide.

What Does The Monster Eat?

Humans!

Monsters who eat fruits and veggies don't scare nobody!

Where Does It Sleep?
The monster would have to sleep some place that is either extremely cold or extremely hot, because that would make it more of a challenge for the humans to try to get rid of it while it's resting up for the next day of ravaging the human race.

What would the monsters be called?

My monsters would be called Cannibellas. Well because they're flesh-eating monsters that are also female, and they're not really that ugly or crude to look at. Sort of like the sirens in Greek mythology. They could lure people, especially men.  But because they are so huge, most men would probably run from them!! :)

Interesting People: Anousheh Ansari

Anousheh Ansari was born September 12, 1966, Mashhad, Iran. Her life story could be titled: Dots on the Map from Iran to Texas to Space. She displayed both the American and Iranian flags on the sleeve of her spacesuit.

Anousheh Ansari’s family is originally from Iran but they transplanted themselves in America after the Islamic Revolution; and guess where they chose to settle? Yup! Texas!

She had a childhood dream. Going into space.

Did she realize that dream? Yes she did!

Did she have to overcome prejudices and obstacles? Uuuhhh … hmmm?

A female, an American of Iranian descent who wanted to display both the American and Iranian flags on the sleeve of her spacesuit.

Was she insane? NO! She was a dreamer and her dreams came true!

Anouseh Ansari’s story is your typical American success story. Or at least, all of US would like to believe that her story is “typical” because it feels good to be able to boast to others that this kind of dream realization happens only in America. Chris Matthews, host of MSNBC’s “Hardball” likes to call these kinds of typical fairy tales “American exceptionalism”.

Curated Content for Crypto Newbies: Cryptocurrency: Tokens vs Coins

New to cryptocurrency and trying to learn?  So am I.

I started learning about cryptocurrency in 2017. My intro to crypto was unintentional.  I joined a forum that used a virtual currency and had a faucet.  That started me looking for other faucets.  I stumbled upon several free faucets.  What got me excited was that I could earn cryptocurrency for performing small tasks like participating in surveys and then trade them for cash (USD) with friends who like to buy crypto. This is truly peer-to-peer transactions.

Along the way I learned about tokens. It was accidental. I was searching for more ways to earn crypto coins and created an account on a platform that rewarded me in tokens. It turned out I had the option of converting the tokens into Cryptocurrency or Gift Cards. I opted for the crypto coins so I could keep trading them with my friends for fiat currency (USD).

Do you want to know the difference between crypto coins versus tokens?  Here is an excellent article published by crypto.com.

Crypto Tokens vs Coins — What’s the Difference?

In my mind, even though there is a slight difference between the two, I am very glad they both exist. So we now have cryptonomics and tokenomics. It's all good.

Blogging Advice, Tips and Tricks : Refresh Your Old Content

Revisiting your old blog posts is always a good idea, if for no other reason than to fix the broken links. But with the constantly evolving and ever-changing online landscape, the content or information may need to be updated. Particularly if you published reviews and/or recommendations. If you have been blogging for a while then you know this is a must-do task. If you're a newbie blogger, you will bookmark this tip for future reference.

Occasionally, an update is totally pointless. You need to delete the post or the article and just get rid of it! If you're an online entrepreneur, this is a project you should do in your “down time”, i.e. after you've taken care of your priority tasks: banging out blog posts (or articles), responding to comments, social media sharing and other blog promotion activities, etc. Perhaps set aside a few hours each week or every other week to revisit and review old blog posts.

If you have affiliate marketing websites or blogs, sometimes vendors you are approved for discontinue their program. You don't always get the memo or the eMail. You should test your referral links at your site to make sure they lead the visitor to correct landing page. Often my click testing indicated the link is inactive which is not only upsetting because there was no notification as to “when” that happened, but it also makes you wonder how many other people also clicked it, got the error message, and then left your site never to return. (My thoughts or worries.)

There are supposedly free tools that can help you with this effort, i.e. help you find broken links. They are available but I have yet to use one successfully. However, others have. So don't let my lack of skills hinder you.

It's your work and if it's perfectly good work, don't let it go to waste. This blogging tip can not be stressed enough. If you serious about your blogging, then make time to refresh or update your old content. Content that dates back several years may still be critical and relevant. Do your best to salvage what you can. You never know.  May be a gold mine buried in there!

Don't just take my advice. Listen to the advice of professionals.

Michael Jackson (August 29, 1958 – June 25, 2009)

Michael Jackson was so much more than an eclectic and consummate entertainer. He was an extremely generous humanitarian and would no doubt like for people to remember his love and genuine care and concern for children.

“HEAL THE KIDS” SPEECH at OXFORD UNIVERSITY 2001(Excerpt):

As you all know, our two countries broke from each other over what Thomas Jefferson referred to as “certain inalienable rights”. And while we Americans and British might dispute the justice of his claims, what has never been in dispute is that children have certain inalienable rights, and the gradual erosion of those rights has led to scores of children worldwide being denied the joys and security of childhood. I would therefore like to propose tonight that we install in every home a Children’s Universal Bill of Rights, the tenets of which are:

1. The right to be loved without having to earn it

2. The right to be protected, without having to deserve it

3. The right to feel valuable, even if you came into the world with nothing

4. The right to be listened to without having to be interesting

5. The right to be read a bedtime story, without having to compete with the evening news

6. The right to an education without having to dodge bullets at schools

7. The right to be thought of as adorable – (even if you have a face that only a mother could love).

“The Dangers of Being Too Political on Social Media” ~ Can We Talk? Or At Least Think.

The following thoughts were provoked by an article published by a person in my Google Plus circles, MikeAllton. He's a social media consultant and was given the opportunity to publish his content at MarketingProfs.com which he titled: “The Dangers of Being Too Political on Social Media”.

Let's face facts people. Social media is here to stay.

I might also add:

  • Social media is no different from Mars Hill, except that the reach of the debate and the discussions is worldwide, and you don't have to be deemed “one of the great minds” in order to add your two cents into the babbling cauldron.
😉

I love a spirited discussion and debate. Especially with my husband. Who usually always wins because he tires me out. It's not that he persuades me. I just run out of wind.

Regards friends in my social networks, I am careful to choose who to discuss really in-depth serious matters with, whether it be politics, religion or other really “tough stuff”. But if I am deeply concerned about an adverse impact of a decision, friend or no friend, I think it would wrong for me to not say anything and I feel compelled to be willing to sacrifice my “comfort zone” for the greater good. Even if I run the risk of losing a friend (or get yelled at by a total stranger who doesn't know me at all).

Some matters are worth taking the risk of losing a friend.
But you have to decide that.

Some matters are worth taking the risk of losing your job.
But you have to decide that.

Would you rather not say anything just to remain friends, only years later to have that “adverse impact” of a political decision manifest itself and then speak up? Only to have your friend look at you and ask: “Why didn't you say something then??! I thought I was your friend!”

Would you rather choose to keep a job only to find that, in reality, you relinquished your freedom?

I never think in terms of “dangers” of expressing my views on matters that impact humanity because the disagreement might cause a divide or severe a relationship or make people so angry they turn into the Incredible Hulk.

As insignificant as my thoughts are to the grand scheme of things and the survival of the human race, I think of whether it would be “dangerous”  to NOT express myself.

Places to Live: Florida OR Texas? CHOOSE!

I grew up in Florida.  I now live in Texas.  Neither state has state taxes; and the weather is usually pretty nice all year round, except for hurricanes and tornadoes every now and then. So I don't have to choose.  I can say BOTH!  If you love palm trees and coconut trees, then definitely your choice should be Florida.

Having lived in both states I can attest that the information the article (mentioned below) writer supplied is very reliable. Even though Florida came out “the winner”, I am still happy that I moved my family to Texas. What I'm not happy about is that folks from California keep moving to Texas!

Why can't they keep on moving and relocate to Florida. The prices of residential and commercial properties are SOARING!! And I know it's all because of them!! They're moving from California and bringing their California prices with them.

I know I'm being selfish. But I really do wish those folks would stay where they are OR move somewhere else! It could be Florida. 🌴 It could be another country. Just STOP moving to Texas! Please!

You Think You Know All About Witches | earthpages.ca (Reblog)

A very informative post:  Witch. Two ideas (or facts, if you prefer) presented that were news to me!

(1) Witches are born witches. Sorcerers get to apply for the job later on in life.

(2) Witch doctors were called witch doctors because people called on them to cure an illness believed to have been caused by a witch.

Throwback Music: Everybody Wants To Rule The World ~ Tears for Fears

My YouTube pick for Throwback Thursday is the original video by an awesome duo from my generation called Tears for Fears. Threw in the other video just because.

These guys held a concert in Austin, Texas in 2015; Austin Music Hall. Did not attend but was so glad to see the advertisement in the paper and to know these two brothers childhood friends were still around making their awesome music. ((I always thought they were brothers.  But I discovered later they were just good friends.)  I converted some of my kids and got them to listen to this talented duo. :)  The music of Tears for Fears is still relevant today.

You want to know a secret? It's a genuine secret. Never told this to anybody but always thought it. You see the guy with the long black hair and the curly locks?  He looks like one of my cousins.  Never told anybody because my cousin was a girl named Helen.  Kept that secret for almost 30 years.  Guess it's OK to reveal it now.  :)

War Movie Classics: The Dirty Dozen

If you are making a list of greatest war movies, The Dirty Dozen (1967) has to go on that list.  All-star cast. All-star action!  “The Dirty Dozen” is a war movie classic.

Image credit.

This is my movie review.

Traditionally, in the United States, around Independence Day (4th of July), Memorial Day (celebrated the last Monday in May), Veterans Day (November 11), etc. television stations air military movies that are supposed to foster American patriotism. At one time FoxNews.com published a list of “The 30 Greatest War Movies of All Time”. Some of the movies I picked were on their list. Some were not. But they're still on my list for great war movies.

The Dirty Dozen (1967) is one of them.

This is a great movie about 12 convicts being given a second chance to start life over if they serve their country on a military mission and of course if they survive. I still enjoy it every time I watch it. These two lines are the ones I still remember.

*** (Background for the scene: There was an obvious commotion coming from the room; the definite sound of men fighting, or rather … settling their differences in the only way men know how.)
- Sergeant Clyde Bowren: [as Major Reisman exits the room ] : Whats going on, sir?
- Major John Reisman: Oh, the gentleman from the South had a question about the dining arrangements. He and his comrades are discussing place settings now.

***
Cracked up (laughed) when the major said that. Some say the movie Inglorious Basterds was inspired by this movie. Well it may have been inspired but it was nowhere near as good as this classic starring some of my favorite actors: Lee Marvin, Charles Bronson, Telly Savalas and Jim Brown, to name a few. They tried to do sequels but they are not as good as the original.

No argument that it's a classic.  But some say the movie “Inglourious Basterds ” was inspired by this movie. Inspired?  Perhaps.  Better than?  Not even close!!  Have no doubt Quentin Tarantino, the Director of "Inglorious Basterds", would say "Amen!" to my comparison.  This classic film starred some of my favorite actors: Lee Marvin, Charles Bronson, Telly Savalas and Jim Brown, to name a few.

 * * * * * * * * IN MEMORY OF * * * * * * * *

Remembering the stars who are no longer with us.

* Lee Marvin (February 19, 1924 – August 29, 1987)

* Charles Bronson (November 3, 1921 – August 30, 2003)

* Aristotelis “Telly” Savalas (January 21, 1922 – January 22, 1994)
