Do You Dare Go Dowsing for Graves?

Gravestones are fascinating historical markers.  But not all graves are marked.  The history of those buried is lost.  Or not!

“Some people use the term “dowsing” while others use “divining” or “witching”. All three terms mean the same thing.”  Some say dowsing is pseudoscience and does not work.  Nevertheless people earnestly dowse for graves in certain areas where bodies are believed to be, but the burial spot or final resting place has become lost because they are unmarked. Volunteers for history societies often dowse for graves; and there are others who have their reasons.  Very interesting.

Artists I Fancy: Impressionist Painters: Monet and Others

A brief introduction to artists, Claude Monet and others, who made such a lasting impression, reproductions of their original works adorn many homes and offices. Through his persistence Monet's paintings gained the recognition they deserve and he opened the door for fellow artists.

The letter "i" stands for "I'm impressed."

The term “impressionism” was first used in 1874, and its initial usage was not very complimentary. A critic was making a sarcastic remark about one of Monet's landscape paintings. Not allowing an unfavorable judgment to cramp his style, Claude Monet (1840 – 1926), working with Pierre Auguste Renoir (1841 – 1919), developed the technique of broken-color painting. These two artists are recognized as the founders of the art form known as Impressionism.

Others who were also a part of the group known as impressionist painters include: Édouard Manet (1832 – 1883), Jacob Camille Pissarro (1831 – 1903), Paul Cézanne (1839 – 1906), and Edgar Hilaire Germain Degas (1834 – 1917).

Monet and Renoir
Plus The Others

An art aficionado, I am not. But like most people, my attention can easily be captured by an impressive painting. The artwork of Claude Monet has always impressed me. However, it appears that Monsieur Monet had to work arduously at developing a fan base who appreciated his art. Of course, Auguste Renoir painted female nudes. Not that he wasn't a great artist because his subjects were bare naked ladies. But gathering appreciative admirers was not as difficult. Nevertheless, through his persistence Monet's paintings have gained the recognition they deserve and there are many of today's artists who will readily admit that their art style has been influenced by the work of Claude Monet.

As all of the impressionist painters named are already well known, there is a wealth of information about them that can be found online. Since they are no longer with us, there is nothing substantial left to be added (unless authentic secret diaries or original works stashed in someone's attic are discovered). Below are links to condensed biographies of each artist which serve as an excellent introduction should you wish to know more about them.

The ArtStory.org published a biographical snap-shot of:

  • Claude Monet (1840 – 1926);
  • Édouard Manet (1832 – 1883); and
  • Edgar Hilaire Germain Degas (1834 – 1917).

For the biography of Pierre Auguste Renoir, visit notablebiographies.com.

A wonderful presentation of the life of Jacob Camille Pissarro (1831 – 1903) can be found at impressionniste.net.

PBS.org provided an introduction to the life of Paul Cézanne (1839 – 1906) for the program which aired July 2006 entitled Cézanne in Provence.

Ancient History: Modern Day Arabs and Their Father Abraham

Genealogy has been and always will be a topic of interest to human beings. We are all curious about our beginnings or origins. These days some even pay for expensive DNA tests to see if they can determine their ancestry. Others comb through paper documents, computerized records, etc. and/or combine the findings of the research of historical records with the scientific test results to confirm their lineage. Some people search the scriptures.

We know the Hebrew patriarch Abraham had many sons and that God promised him that his descendants would be innumerable.  One of his sons was Ishmael born to him by Hagar, the Egyptian slave, who served as a surrogate mother for Sarah, his wife.

The Ishmaelites were, are, or should be the descendants of Ishmael. For genealogy purposes, this matter seems pretty cut and dry. But who are the true Ishmaelites?

Society and Culture: Are Secret Societies a Threat?

Did you hear?  Beyoncé and Jay-Z are members of the Illuminati.

Uh-huh. And this strikes fear in me because … ???  ... WHY?

Well, at least now I get Ray Romano’s joke about them being the most powerful couple in America. :)  But Jay-Z and his lovely wife, Beyoncé are probably laughing way harder than everybody else.

Read an article about so-called secret societies – Freemasons, Rosicrucian Order, Illuminati, etc.

Top 5 Secret Societies |Wizzley.com

This provides a wealth of material if anyone wants something to write about it. But to take these groups seriously? WHY?

  • Are they dangerous??
  • Because they have a secret??
  • Because they are secretive??
  • Because they might also have a lot of money and possibly some influence on persons in high places and can change the course of the world??!!!! And you have no control over it??

Gimme a break! Who doesn’t have a secret??

Rich or poor. Between dreaming and having your own secrets, can’t nobody control you!!

**** Hmmm … this is kind of an afterthought but … UM … Such type organizations could be a threat to the members. Everything being so hush hush - if a crime were committed, where would they go for justice? Maybe the Cosa Nostra probably holds court on the weekends. (O.o)

Americans and Capital Punishment | You're Either For It OR Against It

Do you read “The Economist”? They publish very worthwhile reading material. Food for thought. On this particular topic, for many, however, there is not too much think about. Most people have drawn their line in the sand and they are either for capital punishment or against it.

My friend Jo Harrington is AGAINST the death penalty and provides more than ample information to support her position.
In the end, though her arguments are powerful and thought-provoking, my position is FOR and I can not be dissuaded. Not even the pope can persuade me.  (Pope Francis Declares Death Penalty Unacceptable in All Cases - The New York Times) While the guilty criminals sit on death row awaiting execution, it gives them time to reflect on the events which brought them to their soon to be final destination - events in their life and their life or lives of those who are no longer with us because of them - and maybe they can come to grips with the fact they are only receiving their comeuppance.

Poor Eve.  Mother of the first murderer and the first murder victim.  In that particular case, The Judge showed mercy and spared the murderer's life.  The debate continues.

How America - Can And Will - Abolish The Death Penalty

New Hampshire has just failed to abolish the death penalty-by one vote. Given that the Granite State has not actually executed anyone since 1939, you might think this doesn't matter much. But, obviously, it matters to the one man on death row in New Hampshire, a cop-killer called Michael Addison.

Freelance Writing Opportunities : WWW : Wizzley Welcomes Writers

Online writing communities are mushrooming all over the worldwide web. The majority of them are free to sign up, have a revenue-sharing plan, allow you to work at your own pace and you can write on any number of topics. Some are pay-per-view. Some are pay-per-click. Some are based on actual product sales. Usually, the only stringent criteria is a certain number of words required to publish a post. The main thing is they are legitimate work-at-home opportunities.

This blog entry discusses one of those communities, Wizzley.com, which is based in Germany. Since the Internet is worldwide, where a company's headquarters is located is irrelevant. This post is the beginning of a series of posts which will showcase these different sites and my own experience.  Wizzley.com is not the first site that I published for, but it is one of the current websites where my articles are still live for public viewing.

My first article was published May 2013, so next month will be my first anniversary. To date there are 34 “Wizzles” to my credit. The site owners and the writers in the community are supportive. The publishing platform is easy to use and their revenue-sharing plan is reasonable and money can be earned via VigLink, Amazon, AllPosters, Zazzle, Google Adsense or Chitika. Text referral links from other affiliate advertisers like ShareASale or Commission Junction are also allowed. Those are the highlights. Republishing Previously Published Content

Information for those who used to contribute to YAHOO Voices before that network was shut down. What many of us liked about the YCN (YAHOO Contributor Network) was that it accepted "previously published articles". What was really great was that payment was actually received for articles that had been sitting at another site for well over a year with almost nothing to show for it!
