Blogging and Writing Advice: Keep it Evergreen!

Have been an active member of HUBPages.com, a popular online writing community, since 2013.  The HP editors give you a lot of freedom to write about almost anything and everything!  But the best piece of advice they provided was to always encourage the writers to publish evergreen content, which is content that's sort of “timeless”, meaning write about a topic today that 5 to 10 years later, people will still be searching for information about it.  In other words, there is a great probability that your articles will be found via an organic search for years to come and will generate residual income for you.  This has proven to be true with my articles.

As of today, my author's profile* shows twenty (20) HUBs or articles. My pages get some traffic but they aren't viral. The content is stuff like history, movies, books, real estate, etc. Those are evergreen. Right? My fellow freelance writer, Julie-Ann Amos, who is also a professional writer, has published almost 600 articles. She picked a topic that was so off-the-wall!! It's evergreen alright! She wrote it in 2 Parts. Bet you can't guess what it is! Must say that when the site owners said they encouraged evergreen material, but this particular topic never occurred to me. Hint: It's a beauty and fashion tip.

Dr. Dobson's Parenting Advice is Proven

Dr. James Dobson is a well-known psychologist who specializes in advice on parenting (especially for new parents).

Focus on the Family, his non-profit ministry provide counseling and resources on marriage, parenting and other family matters; and he has also authored several books on these topics.

Dr. James Dobson is a well-known psychologist and the founder of Focus on the Family, a non-profit ministry that supplies advice and resources on marriage, parenting and other family matters. He describes two types of children: the compliant child – an obedient child that heeds good advice and follows a path to peace; versus the defiant child – who is the exact opposite. He says most children are “in between” those two extremes.

Having given birth to eleven children – all living – all raised except for one – I can state unequivocally that Dr. Dobson is correct. Most children are between the two extremes. However, if you happen to get one that is wholly defiant – my advice is … PRAY!! Pray you survive them until they reach the age of eighteen and then … send them on their way!

English: James Dobson.
You see children must realize that one day if they live, they will be the same age as mommie and daddy. If they have children of their own, mommy and daddy will no longer have to explain why the “rules” were so flipping ludicrous!! There are many who claim to have programs that work if you happen to be raising a difficult and trying child. Some of them will even offer you their programs free of charge. Quite frankly, everybody has to wade through those muddy murky waters on their own. What may work for your family could cause chaos and mayhem in another person’s home. So tread very cautiously.

I can tell you that as a young parent, reading the Dobson books was extremely helpful. Many who might not be of the Christian persuasion probably steer clear of his writings. But the advice he offers is very generic and can be applied regardless of one’s religious beliefs or nationality or ethnicity.

As I stated earlier, my babies are all full grown now, with only one remaining. In five more years, she’ll be stepping out on her own. Five years? That’s half a blink of an eye. Really it is. My oldest child has already passed the over the hill mark. Back in my day, “over the hill” used to be age 30. It seems like it was just yesterday when we were teaching him how to walk. Though the memories are sweet, of a truth, my husband and I look forward to the “empty nest years” with great anticipation.

But getting to my point: If you are a new parent, and mommy and daddy are no available for you to ask them about the “rules”, pick up a book by Dr. Dobson. No doubt you can find one or more at your local library or even a church library. If not, his books are available for purchase online.

It's Springtime! Let's Keep It Rosy!

Who doesn't love the spring?  Particularly for the flowers.  My late mother loved gardening.  She especially loved planting roses.  So it's not just the season.  It's for this reason, roses have a sentimental value for me.  In addition, my research for this short blog post disclosed many interesting facts about roses that makes me appreciate these lovely flowers even more.

Did you know?

🌹  Most roses bloom in spring but not all roses bloom in spring.

🌹  Some roses such as the Rosa "Peace" and the Rosa "Radrazz" Knock Out are repeat bloomers or continuous bloomers and bloom at various times throughout the year.  Not just during the spring.

🌹  Do you know how to care for your roses in spring?  Protecting, pruning, etc.?  Do you know how to mix your own rose food?  Learn how.  Rose gardening tips.

🌹
Did you know that every rose color has a special meaning or symbolism?  For example:  The blue rose symbolizes hope and complexity.  Curious to know about the white, the red, the pink, the purple, the black and the green?  Yes, there are green roses.
In fact, there's one green rose that's called St. Patrick's Rose.  (Top 10 Most Beautiful Green Roses.)

https://wizzley.com/roses/?pr=4530

🌹  Did you know roses could be eaten?  Yes, there are many edible flowers.  But I never thought about eating a rose.  Have you?

“Roses have been used in cooking for thousands of years and they continue to be a staple in Bulgaria, Turkey, Morocco, Tunisia, Iran, and northern India.”

Who knew?

Artists I Fancy: Impressionist Painters: Monet and Others

A brief introduction to artists, Claude Monet and others, who made such a lasting impression, reproductions of their original works adorn many homes and offices. Through his persistence Monet's paintings gained the recognition they deserve and he opened the door for fellow artists.

The letter "i" stands for "I'm impressed."

The term “impressionism” was first used in 1874, and its initial usage was not very complimentary. A critic was making a sarcastic remark about one of Monet's landscape paintings. Not allowing an unfavorable judgment to cramp his style, Claude Monet (1840 – 1926), working with Pierre Auguste Renoir (1841 – 1919), developed the technique of broken-color painting. These two artists are recognized as the founders of the art form known as Impressionism.

Others who were also a part of the group known as impressionist painters include: Édouard Manet (1832 – 1883), Jacob Camille Pissarro (1831 – 1903), Paul Cézanne (1839 – 1906), and Edgar Hilaire Germain Degas (1834 – 1917).

Monet and Renoir
Plus The Others

An art aficionado, I am not. But like most people, my attention can easily be captured by an impressive painting. The artwork of Claude Monet has always impressed me. However, it appears that Monsieur Monet had to work arduously at developing a fan base who appreciated his art. Of course, Auguste Renoir painted female nudes. Not that he wasn't a great artist because his subjects were bare naked ladies. But gathering appreciative admirers was not as difficult. Nevertheless, through his persistence Monet's paintings have gained the recognition they deserve and there are many of today's artists who will readily admit that their art style has been influenced by the work of Claude Monet.

As all of the impressionist painters named are already well known, there is a wealth of information about them that can be found online. Since they are no longer with us, there is nothing substantial left to be added (unless authentic secret diaries or original works stashed in someone's attic are discovered). Below are links to condensed biographies of each artist which serve as an excellent introduction should you wish to know more about them.

The ArtStory.org published a biographical snap-shot of:

  • Claude Monet (1840 – 1926);
  • Édouard Manet (1832 – 1883); and
  • Edgar Hilaire Germain Degas (1834 – 1917).

For the biography of Pierre Auguste Renoir, visit notablebiographies.com.

A wonderful presentation of the life of Jacob Camille Pissarro (1831 – 1903) can be found at impressionniste.net.

PBS.org provided an introduction to the life of Paul Cézanne (1839 – 1906) for the program which aired July 2006 entitled Cézanne in Provence.

If interested, artcyclopedia.com is an online database where the artwork of thousands of artists can be viewed freely.

Ancient History: Modern Day Arabs and Their Father Abraham

Genealogy has been and always will be a topic of interest to human beings. We are all curious about our beginnings or origins. These days some even pay for expensive DNA tests to see if they can determine their ancestry. Others comb through paper documents, computerized records, etc. and/or combine the findings of the research of historical records with the scientific test results to confirm their lineage. Some people search the scriptures.

We know the Hebrew patriarch Abraham had many sons and that God promised him that his descendants would be innumerable.  One of his sons was Ishmael born to him by Hagar, the Egyptian slave, who served as a surrogate mother for Sarah, his wife.

The Ishmaelites were, are, or should be the descendants of Ishmael. For genealogy purposes, this matter seems pretty cut and dry. But who are the true Ishmaelites?

Texas is Fascinating : Agree or Disagree

For those of you who don't know this, when people joke about everything in Texas being big, they're joking and they're telling you the truth. Grew up in South Florida but developed a fascination with the 28 th state admitted to the Union when I watched the movie "Giant" starring Rock Hudson, Elizabeth Taylor, and James Dean.

One final thought:

September is National Yoga Month and perhaps nobody has made this connection but seems to me Yoga and Aromatherapy would pair quite nicely. Don't you agree?

You Can Earn Income From Writing

I am active in various Facebook Groups and Google Plus communities which share blogging and writing tips and tricks, work at home advice, etc.

One question that pops up consistently is:
  • What are the best sites to earn from your writing?

The question would be a lot easier to answer if everybody agreed on one uniform definition for “best”.

My idea of “best” might be another person's idea of “mediocre” because the particular sites that I think are terrific don't really suit the other person's criteria for making money consistently and achieving their financial goals.

So the “best” that I can do is say the best sites that have worked for me.

perfect gift for teacher, students, professor, business man, writer, blogger

Forum CoinPostloop, and MyLot are social sites and/or forums that have paid me consistently.  The easiest way to earn at these sites is to just be active.  If you are active on social media and earn nothing; then you can be socially active at these sites and get paid for it.

My HUBs or articles published at HUBPages generate income.  As do my pages and posts at WizzleyWritedge, and Daily Two Cents.  The income is earned mainly via a Google Ad Sense revenue-share plan.  Publish evergreen content at these sites and then let the content generate residual income, while you work on other writing and blogging projects.

Medium is a site I use mainly to share republished content and redirect traffic to my primary income-earning websites. However, if you are a good writer you might be able to make good money if you sign up for their Medium Partner Program. I have not signed up as yet, but here is what someone else has said about their experience.

Listverse is another writing opportunity: Write & Get Paid $100. Sound too good to be true? It's true! I checked.

However, at this point, Medium and Listverse are on my To Do List.  I need to work up the courage up to submit my work. The competition is overwhelming and I'm terrified of rejection. I just need to get over it!

Anyway! Don't let my fear hold you back! If you've got the confidence and the skills ... Go for it!

Another potential income opportunity that I have yet to embrace is selling articles. I am at SEOClerks (a forum I joined via Postloop) where I see people selling their articles. I haven't tried it, but if they can make money from selling articles, why not me?  This is an income-avenue to be explored in the future.

FINAL POINT:
There are all kinds of writing opportunities out there and newsletters or blogs one can subscribe to for opportunities. I subscribe to Freedom With Writing. Check out this post: 38 Blogs that Pay Writers $50+ for Guest Posts.

Hope you found this post informative.

Online Writing Communities : HUBPages Earnings Can Be Inherited

A while back I read a complaint that someone had passed away but that the site was still earning income from the deceased writer's articles.

First of all, though that may sound not quite “kosher”, there's actually nothing wrong or illegal with doing that. If the writer did not make any provisions for the account to be transferred to a “beneficiary” then earnings go to the site owners. Who else?

Today, however, I found this detailed information that made it plain what the site's policy and procedures are. If you happen to be a HUBPages Contributor, “Your HUBPages Income Can Be Inherited”.  This is not "my story".  It is the journey of another HP Contributor, Amy (Happymommy2520).  If you're interested in my journey, see the links below.

Appreciate the clarification. Good to know and good to know what to do with my HUBs. The content is evergreen and my HUBs do earn income, slowly but surely. There's no need to delete them after I'm gone.  No doubt the residual income would be welcomed.

Aesop: unclear biography, unwritten fables, timeless morals

This post shares a link from fellow freelance writer Tolovaj – a magical writer who hails from Ljubljana, Slovenia.  Tolovaj doesn’t just publish written material.

"Tolovaj publishes masterpieces!
You can quote me on that.  💓

When you visit the articles, you become instantly mesmerized.  The information is fascinating reading, but the layout and presentation of the images that complement the content is absolutely exquisite! This particular link is to a mini-bio of the famous fabulist, whom we all know as Aesop, but whom we also don’t know very much about.  (???)  To put it in Tolovaj’s words:  "… his fables are much more clear than his biography."
