Asian-American Legend ~ Bruce Lee (Nov 27, 1940 – July 20, 1973)

God bless the Internet and especially social networks, bloggers, and online writing communities. So there’s this really cool guy – Nathan Bernardo, aka NateB11 – and he is a loyal and devoted martial arts disciple. He knows a lot about MA and writes articles on the topic. Of course, in America, we know that the reason we know about kung fu, karate, and all that stuff is because the one and only Bruce Lee told US it exists and proved it by teaching US how it’s done!

Bruce Lee departed this world in 1973 leaving behind a legion of adoring fans, some of whom would give birth to future admirers.  Legion!  Some of his fans – like my kids – hadn’t even been born yet!!  To this day, whenever information is published about this legendary martial artist, people just can’t resist taking a peek, to see if it reveals anything more about Mr. Lee that we did not know.

Check out this HUB by NateB311.

If you have ever seen the popular film Enter the Dragon starring Bruce Lee, then you probably remember the scene where the old British gentleman meets with Mr. Lee in a garden to discuss recruiting him for a mission to catch a bad guy.  Did you know that the design of the garden where they had the meeting was based on principles of feng shui?

Do You Love Reading Children's Books?

Do you enjoy reading books for children? Not reading children's books to children for their education, entertainment, and enjoyment. But do you - the adult-like reading them?

Several years back, my spouse and I contemplated the idea of writing books for children. We even had ourselves tested to see if we had the necessary skills and aptitude. We were looking for a means of earning income while working from home and caring for our young children and thought this might be a viable solution. The test results were persuasive, so we decided on this path to pursue our financial goals. We will never know if we would have been as successful as the author of the Harry Potter books. After a few manuscript rejections by various publishers, we turned our efforts to more practical, more immediate, income-earning opportunities.

Although no longer interested in writing books for children, I discovered something about myself that I did not know. I thoroughly enjoy immersing myself in children's books. Not reading them to my children or to children, but I like reading them for myself. Yes. It's an indulgence.

Many books for children, adolescents or young adults are about 100 to 250 pages and are a quick read. Those marvelous children's picture books with their exquisite illustrations are even shorter reads; about 25 pages, pictures included. But what a wonderful distraction they are from the daily grind of work, housework, grocery shopping, and other mundane chores. They're so adventurous and other-worldly. Reading children's books actually refreshes and energizes me.

During the course of our failed attempt at becoming children's book authors, I found numerous writers in this field that I wish I had been introduced to when I myself was a child. I had never heard of many of them and yet they were award-winning, outstanding, notable, respected authors. Laurence Yep, Katherine Paterson, Madeleine L'Engle and Jane Yolen are four such writers.

So, if you're wondering what would be a guilt-free indulgence to set yourself free from your daily routine for just a few moments, try reading a children's book. Choose books by the authors mentioned above, or if you don't know where to begin, visit Al's Book Club for Kids. Oprah also publishes a Kids' Reading List. Although these lists were created with children in mind, they are perfect for those of us who want to indulge our inner child.

[Children’s Book Recommendation] The Emperor and the Kite by Jane Yolen

Ever notice a small child look up when an adult walks into the room? Especially a very tall adult. Do you ever notice their eyes widen and how they bend their heads back almost to the point that you think they might break their little neck trying to look up in awe at this giant!

Do you wonder what they might be thinking?

Do they think:

- How does a person get to be so big?

- Will I ever become a giant like that?

- I am so small. Will that big person hurt me?

- They're looking at the wall. Do they see me down here? I could get crushed!  Better move to some place safe like next to my mom.

Now imagine you're a small child in a home filled with giants. A giant father. Giant brothers. Giant sisters. All of them doing gigantic enormous things every day! Always busy all of the time. So busy they never even see you. You're so tiny. So tiny that your family gives you the name that means “the smallest one”

You think to yourself:

  • Do they call me that because I'm not as big as they are and never will be?
  • Or is it because they think so little of me that I might as well not exist?

Though not her exact words, these were very likely the daily thoughts of Princess Djeow Seow, fourth youngest and smallest daughter of the Emperor of China.

Such was her world. Her brothers were allowed to help her father rule the kingdom. Her sisters brought the food to their father's table.

What was she permitted to do?  Go fly a kite! Literally.

But not everyone disregarded the tiny princess. There was a humble monk who always watched her whenever she hoisted her favorite kite into the air. Each day he would repeat the same prayer to her and each day she would always thank him in the same way. Every day. Each day. Each day. Every day. Except … one day.

Sometimes being “the smallest one” can be a very good thing.

*The Emperor and the Kite by Jane Yolen is suggested reading for 3rd and 4th graders.

Jane Yolen is one of my favorite authors of books for children and young adults.  She has been writing for decades, mainly the fantasy genre.  The sweetness and simplicity of her style is what makes her work so appealing.

Cute Food is Edible Art | Kawaii is Not Just for Kids

Some of my kids love all things Asian.  That's how I learned about the joys of Kawaii.  Kawaii cooking is considered a form of edible art. The food isn’t just for eating; it’s often photographed and shared on social media for its visual appeal.  (But I eat it!)  Here are a few fun facts.

Image by HANSUAN FABREGAS from Pixabay

  1. Kawaii means cute.  Kawaii cooking, or "kawaii bentos," originated in Japan where the term "kawaii" means cute. It involves creating visually adorable and whimsical food designs, often inspired by popular anime and manga characters.

  2. Cooking Ingredients: Kawaii cooking primarily uses ingredients like rice, seaweed, vegetables, and fruits, which are transformed into delightful shapes.

  3. How Do They Get Those Shapes? Cookie Cutters: Special kawaii cookie cutters are often used to cut vegetables, cheese, and other ingredients into cute shapes, making it easier to create charming designs.

  4. Fun Learning for Kids: Allowing children to create kawaii food can make mealtime more enjoyable and encourage them to try new foods.

  5. 'Tis the Season!: People often incorporate seasonal themes and holidays using Kawaii cooking.  For example:  Make cute ghost-shaped rice balls and jack-o'-lanterns made from vegetables for Halloween.

Kawaii cooking is all about making food fun and enjoyable, not just for kids, but for anyone who loves a bit of whimsy in their meals!

How Often Do You Update Your Blog Content?

Blogging Advice and Tips: My Pain, Your Gain: Newbie bloggers should always try to benefit from the blogging experiences of others. That's what I did! How often do you update your blog content?

Once upon a time, a long long time ago (or at least it sure feels that way) … I learned that great sites DIE! Many of the online writing communities that approve me as a contributor no longer exist. Fortunately, I saved backup copies of my work and simply republished the content elsewhere. Wonderful platforms like Medium.com accept both original and republished writing. Whew! That's a relief! Even so, because of my prior experience, I don't put all of my apples in one basket. That means that I know one morning I might wake up and find that Medium has disappeared. Hey! It could happen! But I hope it won't.

Meanwhile, after trying out different blogging platforms (Blogspot, WordPress, Tumblr, Wix, Webs, etc.), I finaly settled on using the Blogger (or Blogspot) platform for publishing my stand-alone blogs. WHY? Blogger is owned by Google and my blogs were approved for Google Ad Sense. The whole purpose for blogging is to monetize my content and earn supplemental income. Because I used the free plan instead of paid services, the other blogging platforms did not make it easy for me to monetize my content. Blogger was super simple and the regular send me eMails when they make significant changes as to how they place ads on your site, etc.

August 20, 2024, Google sent an eMail about “New ad intent chips format: Automatic enrollment ...” I am not really a tech savvy person. So when I get these kinds of messages all I want to know if: Do I have to do anything? Fortunately, Google uses says no action is required because of their commitment to “seamless transition”. And when I read those words, a hallelujah chorus followed and I start doing the happy dance in my seat. LOL.

Anyway! Enough of my babbling. Currently I am publishing six blogs that have been approved for Ad Sense. Getting traffic to the blogs is not a walk in the park and it gets worst when Google does these “updates”. There's no point whining or complaining about the traffic fluctuations because when Google moves you just have to follow along. That's why, I persevere. How Google's Algorithm Updates Affect Your Website's Traffic | LinkedIn

If I were to give advice and tips to newbie bloggers I would tell them to one thing they must always remember: Your blog posts are NOT written in stone. That means you need to constantly revisit your content, check for broken links, check for outdated information, etc.

Review, revise, and even re-purpose your blog posts. Repurpose? You may have initially written the post to cover one topic but so much changed you had to discuss another topic. In other words: That was THEN; This is Now. Another reason I like the Blogger platform is that after my posts have been refreshed, I can re-date them. That's right. Change the date, especially of your changes were significant, so that when visitors drop by they will see current content. If you change the date of a previously published, before hitting the publish button with the new date, check the Permalink. This is the URL that is automatically generated. Depending on the type of template you use, check to see if there is a “Title Link”. If there is, then copy and paste the Permalink into the blank space, then hit publish. Your old URL (i.e. the Permalink) has likely been indexed by the search engines. By attaching that link to your title, when the the search engine crawls, it will pick up the same URL linked to content your updated and redated. Website Crawling: The What, Why & How To Optimize | Search Engine Journal

Since you realize that your have to continuously revisit your content, you might ask: How often must my blog content be updated? (That's what I asked.)

Once upon a time, a long long time ago (or at least it sure feels that way) … I learned that great social media communities DIE! Do you remember Google Plus? I thought the platform would upend Facebook and they probably thought so too. But that didn't happen so they scrapped the project. But when it was active, I used to follow Mike Allton, a blogging and social media expert. He said bloggers should update and/or recycle or "revive" their content regularly, and recommended that you "... invest your time in past posts that you have actual reason and evidence to support the renewed interest." Besides that, links get outdated and it affects your rankings in the search engine. Bad links = Poor quality content. That makes sense!

Another cool feature of Blogspot? When you go into the dashboard to view your listing of posts, some numbers represent the view count. Isn't that awesome? At a glance you can tell that one post was viewed 10 times while another may have viewed 100 times. So which post would you pick to “revive”. Likely the one that seems to be “surviving”, i.e. the one with the most views. This is not always the case. View count is a good rule of thumb. But not a fast and hard rule.

EXAMPLE: Some of my posts date back to 2014. That's 10 years. Some of the information is useless now, even if it shows the post had 1000 views. The content may be time-sensitive, i.e. it was a hot topic THEN, but it isn't NOW. So don't bother making changes. But if your content is “evergreen”, i.e. NOT time-sensitive, that means that something you wrote a decade ago, might still be relevant today.

You should always take heed to good advice. Mr. Allton offered good advice, so I took heed. If you're a newbie blogger, so should you. In fact, here is a link to an article published by Mr. Allton in 2014 and most of it is still applicable today. How To Revive Old Blog Content | Blogging Brute

MEI in Silicon Valley is a Step in the Right Direction

As a member of the Medium.com writing community (view my writer's profile), not only do I enjoy writing content but I also enjoy reading and commenting on the articles of my fellow writers.

Yash Bansal published an article titled "Silicon Valley leaders are labeling ‘DEI’ as harmful and ‘meritocracy’ as ideal". It is an excellent read. After reading, I left comments.  On Medium, responses to comments appear on your profile but they are not counted in your list of stories.  I often re-share my comments with readers who visit my blog.  The comments below are my thoughts.

This is an excerpt from the article that inspired my comments:
“Scale is a meritocracy, and we must always remain one,” Wang proclaimed. “Every decision to bring someone on board is crucial and has never been influenced by current trend…
The reality remains. If you were running a business would you not want to hire the best talent? That's just common sense. But you know what they say. Common sense ain't all that common.

It's marvelous TO SAY we hire for MEI, merit, excellence, and intelligence. But saying it and doing it are two different things.

Had “all things been equal”, there would be no need for discussions like this. But there are still people doing stupid stuff. Can I provide an example? Uhh … yeah. Kamala Harris. What was the first thing Trump and his team jumped on when they realized he was going to run against her? DEI and a question about her racial identity/ WHY? Because they could not think of anything to say to prove she was not qualified. Such as ... she's a convicted felon or .... She grabbed men's crotches BECAUSE SHE COULD! Etc. They had to do something to cast a shadow.

I applaud businesses that say they recruit based on MEI. That type of hiring should have been in place all along. It's a way of moving forward.

HOWEVER, it won't erase DIE (Discrimination, Inequality, and Exclusion) that's been going on FOR CENTURIES.

Just look at all the laws America had to pass to try to fix this CRAP!! The Emancipation Proclamation, The Indian Citizenship Act, the Repeal of the Chinese Exclusion Act, and on and on and on. What was the purpose of those laws? Official oppression for specific groups of citizens, human beings, that other citizens, human beings WANT TO KEEP DOWN!

Anyway! Keep on pushing, Mr. Wang.

Entertainment : Superhero Movies : Gladiator (2000) (UPDATE: Gladiator 2 is Coming!)

Gladiator; Release date May 5, 2000 (USA); Winner of 5 Academy Awards – made the top of my list for outstanding cinematic achievement and has maintained that position of distinction for more than a decade.

UPDATE!!  AWESOME SAUCE!!  GLADIATOR 2 WILL BE RELEASED NOVEMBER 2024.  CAN'T WAIT!!

Published a detailed review of the movie “Gladiator” which starred Russell Crowe, who received the Academy Award for his spectacularly awesome performance as the “gladiator who defied an emperor”.  The critique was also written to honor one of my favorite actors, the late Robert Oliver Reed (1938 – 1999), who passed away during the making of the film. Many people would likely categorize this film as Action/Adventure or Drama or Historical Fiction (because the writers took artistic liberty with the historical facts).  As for me, in my humble imaginative opinion, the film could appropriately be categorized under Superhero Movies because Mr. Crowe played his role like he was a superhero! :)

It must be tough ...

Typical day, minding my own business, not focusing on anything in particular when out of the blue this person says: "It must be tough."

OK. I'll bite. Please dear person thinking random thoughts. Share that one and tell me where did it come from?

Just thinking. ...

"It must be tough ... waking up every day just to kill somebody. I mean like ... it's your job. It's what you do. ... Must be tough to have a mindset like that. Go to sleep knowing you massacred some unarmed people - men, women and children. Wake up the next day and do it again. That's gotta be tough to live your life like that!"

(This thought is not dispensable. Definitely a keeper.)

My 5 Good Fortunes Per My Daughter

My Daughter's Advice Will Be Heeded

Whether the fortune cookie is an American or Chinese tradition is of no consequence because we can all write our own fortunes. However, it is especially nice when someone special writes one for you. In my case, my daughter (at age 12) wrote five fortunes to inspire me.

Even though another fortune says: Advice, when most needed, is least heeded; I'm going to listen to the wisdom of mouth of this babe. It is solid and sound.

1)  You have great confidence in what you're doing.

2)  You can do great things with your energy.

3)  The voice within you is appealing to many.

4)  You are not afraid of what the future has in store for you. Go forth.

5)  Sharing and being fair to others is just part of who you are. Don't ever change.

* * *
Halloween is not traditionally linked with the Chinese fortune cookie. But in case you hadn’t noticed, traditions are made by humankind and we make them up as we go along, and change them when it’s convenient and sometimes just for fun!  Also, it's my daughter's favorite holiday.  :)

Can an Ethiopian Change His Skin ...?

An insult that is not understood is a pointless insult.

Would you believe there is such as thing as a random insult generator? Played with the generator at The Insult Project and decided to copy this one below for my blog post.  Checked this site Jan 19, 2018, and it no longer exists.

People don't dislike you because you're revolting. I mean you are astonishingly revolting, that's just not why people dislike you.”

* * *

Was watching a Denzel Washington movie and there was a brief intense exchange of words between Mr. Washington's character and another character who was playing a support role. Possibly not the exact quote but the character scoffs and says: “You better watch out or I just might call you an Ethiopian!” Mr. Washington's character's defensive reaction and response was: “You know you're probably stupid enough to think that's an insult!”

Huh? What?? (???) Didn't get it! My limited exposure to Ethiopia and experience with Ethiopians left a void in my mind. Could not comprehend the meaning of the dialogue at all. (O.o) Dismissed it and finished watching the movie, The Siege.

Was doing research about one of the Jewish prophets in the Old Testament and came across this scripture:

Can the Ethiopian change his skin or the leopard his spots? Then may you also do good who are accustomed to do evil.”

(Jeremiah 13: 23)

Let's place this quote in context.

  • Which Ethiopia are we talking about??

There is a modern day Ethiopia and there is an Ethiopia which is a land that existed during ancient times. Since it's a scriptural reference, we're going to go with the latter.

Modern Ethiopia is located in the horn of East Africa. Ancient Ethiopia, also known as Cush, was located to the south of Egypt. Cush is the Hebrew name. Ethiopia is the Greek name. (FYI. The Egypt in the Bible and the nation that exists today are both the same.)

Ethiopia translated into English mean “burnt face”. The Ethiopian people we see today are known for their smooth beautiful practically flawless chocolate brown skin. There's no reason why a talented photographer couldn't make a small fortune traversing the country taking pictures of the “humans of Ethiopia”. Evidently, the people who lived in the land called Ethiopia, the in the Bible, also had really nice skin!

So!! Uuuhhh … back to square one! My brain is still registering blanks!

Imagine you get into a heated argument with someone.

The person snarls at you angrily and warns:
“You better get out of my face! You … you … you Ethiopian!!”

You puff up with righteous indignation and shout back:
“Yeah! That's right! I got nice skin!! HATER!!”

(??) Where would this argument go?? (??)

There is a famous world-class chef from Ethiopia. There was a young woman, born in Ethiopia, who was crowned Miss Israel in a beauty pageant. Madonna adopted a baby or babies from Ethiopia. (That's what I heard.)

Opening this topic up for discussion hoping someone can shed some light on it.

WHY would it be an insult

 to call someone an Ethiopian?

Bible Readers: What About All Those "ites"?

Now that you know how to read you can read the Bible for yourself. That's what my momma said.

Most Bible readers (from my generation and the generations in the centuries before mine) will likely say what struck them when the first read the scriptures was all those "begats". Some people will skip over verses, even whole chapters if they see that word. The word "begat" usually connects a string of names that are very difficult to pronounce.

For me, one of things noted when turning the pages of the Old Testament starting with Genesis and working my way to the Revelation was all those "ites". The names for the inhabitants of different ancient nations.

Hittites, Asherites, Jebusites, Amorites, Amakelites, Girgashites, Moabites, Perizzites, Canaanites, and of course, Israelites.

Then it changed from "ites" to "ans".

Syrians, Assyrians, Babylonians, Persians, Romans.

Suffixes in the English language:

ite = follower or supporter

an = pertaining to
* ian = belonging to

Belonging to? Hmmm?  Like Christians?

Yes. Only Christ is not a nation. Christianity and the gospel message of peace and goodwill is not restricted by man-made boundaries. But it's an observation as to how the suffixes were used by the scholarly translators.

JAT. (Just a thought.) :)

If my view were a "theory", the histomap would have thoroughly disproved it.  Alas.  It's not a theory.  It's just a thought.  :)

Who Decided This Nonsense About Royalty and Royal Blood? Why Did We Agree?

As a member of the Medium.com writing community (view my writer's profile), not only do I enjoy writing content but I also enjoy reading and commenting on the articles of my fellow writers.

Maximus Aurelius published an article titled "The Origins of Royalty: A Simple Explanation". It is an excellent read. After reading, I left comments.  On Medium, responses to comments appear on your profile but they are not counted in your list of stories.  I often re-share my comments with readers who visit my blog.  The comments below are my thoughts.

There is a scripture that says “It's not within man to direct his own steps.”

I read that and thought: “Uuuhhh … so?? … we're stupid?” (O.o)

When you read the history of humanity whether you call the people in charge kings, czars, emperors, etc. … don't you ask yourself: 'When did God die and leave them in charge?'

I mean … did it happen that on one day, the human race thought about and decided:

Wait! You want us to take one person, along with their family, and put them over all the rest of us. We even have to kneel down to them? When they eat and sleep, poop and piss, and die just like we do.

OK! I'm excited about this plan. LET'S DO THIS!!

*** (O.o)

Regardless of the origin of royalty … no matter what anybody says … I think civilizations would be better off without them.

If royals were so important to the survival of human life … why is that some countries that used to have kings and queens, but they don't have them anymore.

The fact is: One or more humans are the ones who made up something called “royalty” and then expected all the other humans to be on board with it! But as time passed, other humans thought to themselves: WHY DO WE HAVE TO PUT UP WITH THIS? OFF WITH THEIR HEADS!!

(Just my comical take on the history of mankind. Great article.)

American Politics and Religion in 2024: Separation of Church and State is Still a YAY or NAY!

As a member of the Medium.com writing community (view my writer's profile).  Not only do I enjoy writing content but I also enjoy reading and commenting on the articles of my fellow writers.

Pills for Thoughts published an article titled "In the Shadow of the Guillotine". It is an excellent read and he shares many informational links in his article for further exploration. After reading, I left comments.  On Medium, responses to comments appear on your profile but they are not counted in your list of stories.  I often re-share my comments with readers who visit my blog.  The article includes these statements:
"Along with the decline of democratic institutions, the interplay between religion and politics also continues to significantly shape global socio-political landscapes, even in countries that proclaim to have a clear separation between religion and state."
The comments below are my thoughts.

The GOP is trying HARD to UN-separate religion and politics. Is it because they are devoted believers? NO! It's because they need to create a DISTRACTION to cause DIVISION.

That's how religion is used in the USA. Republicans use religion to get VOTES for themselves or steal votes by making people become UNDECIDED.

BY CONTRAST, Putin uses the church as a HAMMER!! If he can't get the citizenry to submit to his will, he uses "the Lord" to beat them into submission. People who are religious fear God more than they fear man. So he just gets somebody in the church to tell them they need to obey him because his will is God's will.

Yes, I'm pointing a finger at Republicans. I'm not calling the Democrats heathens. They just don't use religion that way. This is an important distinction in today's American political arena.

I can't speak for other faiths, but in the Christian scriptures, the Apostle Peter talks about people who "wrestle with scriptures".. That's what the GOP does. It's a wrestling match because they are trying to get the scripture to FIT their political agenda,

It wearies me to watch Speaker Mike Johnson and the rest of the GOP carrying on like that. Seriously! I get exhausted watching them act up! But hey! This is America.

Book Suggestions : Classic Literature: Francois-Marie Arouet (1694 - 1778) aka Voltaire

Francois-Marie Arouet (1694 - 1778), who later took the name of Voltaire, was once hailed as “the wittiest writer in an age of great wits”, and Candide (or Optimism) was considered “his wittiest novel”. The topic he chose to exercise his wit upon in this novel was the problem of human suffering.

Candide (or Optimism) was written in 1758. At that time, Voltaire was 64 years old. Most consider this his most important work — representative of The Enlightenment (1650-1800). The personal suffering he had endured in his own lifetime, and his study of history convinced him that there is no such thing as Divine Providence directing all human affairs.
