Celebrating the Chinese Fortune Cookie Tradition ~ Good Fortunes for All!

We can all write our fortunes. In my case my daughter wrote 5 good fortunes for me. Her predictions for my future are greatly appreciated and if her advice is heeded no reason why they won't come true. :)

http://amzn.to/2cKZGo3

Next time you have a party, consider giving out homemade fortune cookies. Your guests will love them! This Sunbeam kitchen accessory is easy to use and easy to clean. It comes with a fortune cookie recipe, makes two cookies at a time and translates into family fun because adults and children can participate in the cookie adventure!

Chinese Fortune Cookie.
~ How did it come to US?
~ By way of legend, history, tradition?
~ Is it Chinese or American?

Popular comedian Margaret Cho tells a joke about the TV series Kung Fu starring David Carradine. She says the show should have been called: 'That guy's not Chinese!' You get no argument from me on that, Ms. Cho. Another fascinating tidbit that was shocking for me to discover was that Chinese fortune cookies are also not Chinese. They're American!

Well that's what I heard, and never thought to dispute it as true fact until recently learning that there are different stories about the cookie's origin. Some stories credit Asian immigrants living in California with the invention - individual Asian-Americans, acting on their own initiative; or the group mentioned in a Charlie Brown cartoon that built the railroad, acting together. Whoever!

Then there's another account that says it dates back to the time when China was ruled by the Mongols, about the 13th or 14th century. Supposedly rebels ... I mean, patriots ... had to come up with a way to communicate their battle plans with each other without being exposed and executed by the Mongol ruler, so they would bake cakes and put secret messages inside. Clever!

Clever, but not believable. Sherlock Holmes would no doubt agree with this deduction. Would you not think that if the Chinese fortune cookie originated as a Chinese invention that resulted from the brave and heroic efforts of Chinese patriots, the citizens of China would have incorporated it into their history, legends, traditions, and celebrations?

Ha! It's elementary! Chinese fortune cookies are passed out at Chinese-American restaurants. I watch a lot of Kung Fu movies and whenever they eat at restaurants you never see the waiter pass out a cookie! Brilliant deduction, eh? :)

Maybe that's true. Maybe not. But the truth remains the Chinese fortune cookie has been an American tradition for a very long time and to whoever deserves credit for it, it's a wonderful idea!

Always encouraging people that good fortune is never far from any of us and easily within our reach. That's marvelous motivation to keep on, keeping on! Don't you agree?

Whether the tradition is Chinese or American, fact is we can all write our own fortunes.

Texas Churches Sue to Gain Access to Federal Disaster Relief Coffers

So according to my Facebook Memories, this blog post ~ Should Churches be Tax-Exempt? ~ was shared September 23, 2016. (It was published April 2016 and the updated and republished April 2017.) Whereas it is an interesting discussion, the tax-exempt status for churches is not really a current topic for debate.

This year (September 2017), we in the USA, were hit by 3 hurricanes (Harvey, Irma, and Maria). After it was over, people did what they always do! Go back home and try to salvage what they can salvage and rebuild what needs to be rebuilt, etc., etc. Usually, many organizations and individuals get involved in charitable efforts, donating their time, money and energy. In other words, nobody waits for the government to knock on the door and say “I'm from the government. We're here to help.”   That's a fact.

That FACT has generated a news report I heard about 1 or 2 days ago on the radio. Evidently, the QUESTION to be debated is not about tax exemption for churches but:

  • "Should churches (and other faith-based organizations) receive government funds from FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) for their assistance which they provide as relief for hurricane victims?”

The news report said that some churches (in Texas) had already filed a lawsuit wanting FEMA funds for their efforts.

SUING? Seriously?

Here are some Information References for further details:

Bailey, Sheryl. “Health Care : Sens Propose Bill That Would Allow FEMA Help for Churches Newburgh Gazette.” Newburgh Gazette, 21 Sept. 2017, newburghgazette.com/2017/09/21/sens-propose-bill-that-would-allow-fema-help-for-churches/
The churches note, "Ironically, although FEMA partners with churches to provide shelters and distribute aid to disaster areas, the PA Policy Guide prohibits those same churches from applying for or receiving such relief". … houses of worship were deemed ineligible for the grants under the 1988 Stafford Act.”

Green, Lauren, and Patrick Manning. “Texas Churches Suing FEMA for Equal Access to Nonprofit Relief Funds.” Fox News, FOX News Network, 14 Sept. 2017, www.foxnews.com/us/2017/09/14/texas-churches-suing-fema-for-equal-access-to-nonprofit-relief-funds.html
"President Trump seems to agree. He tweeted last week: 'Churches in Texas should be entitled to reimbursement from FEMA relief funds for helping victims of hurricane Harvey (just like others).'"

Kruzel, John. “How the U.S. Funds Disaster Recovery.” PolitiFact, Tampa Bay Times, 14 Sept. 2017, www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/article/2017/sep/14/how-us-funds-disaster-recovery/.

My Thoughts?

As a faithful Christian, I don't see the need for this discussion no more than there was a need to debate tax the exemption status. The Bible says: As we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all men, especially unto them who are of the household of faith.” (Galatians 6:10) There is no additional language or verses anywhere in the Bible that says: “And make sure you get funding or reimbursement from the government for carrying out this command of Jesus Christ, your Lord and Savior.”

Of course, one could stretch a scriptural “interpretation” and say that going to court and suing to receive FEMA funds is just the good Lord's way of returning the blessing for the kindness shown by 'our church' to others who were in need.  "The Lord helps those who help themselves."

I think it's a stretch.  But if they're wrong the Only One they will answer to on Judgement Day is the Lord in the Divine Court where all final decisions are made.  +++

Blogjob.com - Can First Impressions Be Trusted? (Post Update #2)

Two years today I joined a blogging community called BlogJob and shared my first impression in this post:

A year later I published my revised first impression in this post:
Ah well! It's been a year and it's time to revise my revision of my first impression AGAIN!

Hey! My first impression was right and I'm sticking to it! Sure the site owners made changes. But they haven't SHUT DOWN!  They get an A+++ in my book just for hanging in there! They also get my sincerest thanks because they didn't delete my blog or ask me politely to move on. That is extremely gracious of them. Don't you think so?  Currently publishing two blogs via their platform (My Pain, Your Gain and My Shopping Channel) (post feed below); still being allowed to participate in the Google Ad Sense revenue-share plan; and also being allowed to use affiliate referral links and keep 100% of the earned commissions.  Also, ever once in a while, they let me share my opinion.

Book Suggestions: Mystery , History or Ghost Story?

Peter Ackroyd is a writer, in more ways than one: biographer, historian, poet, novelist. People like to describe him as eccentricMr. Ackroyd is a bit of a recluse, likes to drink, and still writes longhand. Some people consider that type of behavior somewhat peculiar. But he is without a doubt a prolific writer and has written so many books you may not know where to begin.

Suggest you start with The Trial of Elizabeth Cree; it’s a murder mystery set in 1880 Victorian London.

Or … you could try to tackle his voluminous works of the History of England or his retelling of Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales.

If you like horror or spooky stories or you want to get into the spirit of the Halloween season, maybe his collection of English ghost stories might be fun!

UPDATE Sep 2017:
During 2016 my Tumblr account was deleted.  They got their rules.  Follow them or leave! By the end of the year, a new Tumblr blog was set up.  They only deleted my blog.  They didn't banish me!  Evidently, I didn't commit an unforgivable sin, so they let me create another account.  Frankly, I find the Tumblr Staff folks to be very reasonable.  They always answer my messages.  That's very professional and courteous, considering I got a free account.  Wonder how they treat their paying customers.

My new Tumblr blog is called FoxNet2017.

Much like the other blog it can be considered a lifestyle blog or placed under a general category or niche like "Society and Culture" because it shares whatever happens (current events) or has happened (history) in our world.

Create ~ Cook ~ Capture: Are Food Trucks Safe? (REBLOG)

Are food trucks safe? Depends on who you ask?  We are a house divided.  My husband and I would not answer this question the same.  It is a great way to picnic without needing to pack up your own food.

Hmmm?  Thinking of food trucks as a convenient way to picnic has never occurred to me.  On the plus side, all of my food truck experiences have been very satisfactory.  So I agree with blogger's conclusions.

Diversity Topics: Things to Know About the Irish

Fancy myself a freelance writer so I joined various online writing communities that allow me to publish my jibber jabber.  Wizzley and HubPages are such communities.  In addition to these publishing platforms being great places to write and express yourself; they are equally fantastic places to read and learn about almost anything! For example, traveling around the world is only a dream for me; but the writers at these sites take me to all the wonderful places I'd like to go.  Some take me to magical historical places like Ireland.

Thoughts and Opinions : Global Warming Versus Global Returning? Science?

THOUGHT: Suppose global warming is actually global returning?

Sharing these wacky thoughts of mine. Hoping you don’t run away from me even though I speak my mind which is often … kind of weird, strange and Krazee with a capital “K”!

OK So! It’s the year 2017 and it’s spring time here in Austin, Texas, and I never know what kind of weather to expect each day. When we moved to this city in 1998, people use to describe the weather as “climatically perfect”. The weather was terrific!
See Also:

My kids have grown accustomed to my standard excuse that I use to point the finger of blame at … everything!

If something happens, no matter what … I say:

  • “IDK!  I blame global warming. Whatever!
♦ ♦ ♦

Most of you know I believe/read the Bible a lot and as a result, my rationale and reasoning or explanations may come across to others as somewhat “peculiar”. Like this particular thought.

THOUGHT: Suppose global warming is actually global returning?

Follow my thought process (if you can).

According to the Bible, when the earth was first created, Adam and Eve used to walk around in their birthday suits. Naked! The reason they were given clothes didn’t have anything to do with a change in the weather.  Also, Noah preaching about a coming flood was disregarded by the masses because … Why?  Because it had never rained before! Water had never come down from the sky! It would take faith to believe such a thing could happen.

So IF in the beginning, man and woman were able to walk around au naturel, that must mean that the weather was terrific! All the time! Everywhere on planet earth!!

Today it like 79 degrees in Austin, Texas but the day is over.  Earlier this morning it felt a little chilly. Yesterday the heat from the sun was beating me down!

  • Maybe global warming is not disastrous.
  • Maybe it’s a good thing.
  • Maybe … ? Our weather is just going back to the way it was in the beginning.
  • Maybe … global warming is actually global returning.  (O.o)

JAOOMPT! Just another one of my peculiar thoughts.
