Ten Plus One Books Worth Reading - Fox's Picks

Borrowed this idea from another blog post. Listing 10 books plus the Book, that in my humble opinion are worth reading. Some of them are books for kids but recommended for adults who still eat sugary cereals when nobody's looking. Picture books, in particular, are quick and easy reads, often fun, and sometimes very profound!!

Society and Culture: Are Secret Societies a Threat?

Did you hear?  Beyoncé and Jay-Z are members of the Illuminati.

Uh-huh. And this strikes fear in me because … ???  ... WHY?

Well, at least now I get Ray Romano’s joke about them being the most powerful couple in America. :)  But Jay-Z and his lovely wife, Beyoncé are probably laughing way harder than everybody else.

This provides a wealth of material if anyone wants something to write about it. But to take these groups seriously? WHY?

• Are they dangerous??

• Because they have a secret??

• Because they are secretive??

• Because they might also have a lot of money and possibly some influence on persons in high places and can change the course of the world??!!!! And you have no control over it?? 

Gimme a break! Who doesn’t have a secret?? 

Rich or poor. Between dreaming and having your own secrets, can’t nobody control you!! 

**** Hmmm … this is kind of an afterthought but … UM … Such type organizations could be a threat to the members. Everything being so hush hush - if a crime were committed, where would they go for justice? Maybe the Cosa Nostra probably holds court on the weekends. (O.o)

Will The Tiger's Apprentice Ever Be an Animated Film? Paramount Says YES!

Laurence Yep has a reputation for being the premier Chinese-American writer.  It's an awesome compliment when notable filmmakers want to adapt your books to film.

Laurence Yep writes books for children and young adults.  Many know him for book series called Golden Mountain Chronicles.  Screenwriter David Magee (Finding Neverland (watch trailer)) was or is (??) adapting Yep's book - The Tiger's Apprentice (Book One) - into a feature film in 3D animation.

Hoping another one of Laurence Yep's books - City of Fire - might also be adapted. There's an evil dragon and lost treasures of an emperor weaved into the storyline. How can anybody resist turning it into a major feature film?

* * Will The Tiger's Apprentice Ever Be an Animated Film? - Learned about this film adaptation several years back.  This animation project is either "on hold" or has been abandoned.  Can't seem to find any updates about the effort.  Perhaps they're furiously working to complete it, but keeping it all very hush hush because they want to surprise viewers with the finished product!  Hope Magee and company see it through. Sounds fantastic!  :)

In October 2008, Cartoon Network announced the live-action animated film adaptation of the book with a script by David Magee^[3] with Rainmaker Entertainment contracted for the animation.^[4] The project was cancelled after Cartoon Network stopped developing live-action projects. In March 2019, Paramount Pictures announced an animated film adaptation of the book with a script by Magee and a release date of February 11, 2022.^[5]

Book Suggestion: The Acacia Trilogy

American novelist, David Anthony Durham is the author of a trilogy, which is an epic fantasy; and the name he chose for the empire in this mythical land built on conquest, slaves, and the drug trade is called Acacia. Even though the name of this writer did not have a familiar ring for me, it so happens his novels have been translated into eight foreign languages, he is the recipient of ALA awards (American Library Association), and has had his books recognized as New York Times Notable Books.

• In Acacia: The Acacia Trilogy, Book One – Leodan Akaran, ruler of the Known World, dies, but not before ensuring the safety of his beloved children, in order that they might pursue their own destinies. Against their will, the siblings become separated and must learn to survive on their own, forging their own paths.
• And of course, The Other Lands: The Acacia Trilogy, Book Two, is a tale of their travels to other lands, which are tantamount to eye-opening and amazing discoveries of new worlds, even though it was never their plan to set out on a mission of exploration. Yes, yes, yes! There is an evil wicked Queen.
• Finally, the fate of the siblings is known.  The Sacred Band: The Acacia Trilogy, Book Three is _________. THE END.

Book Recommendation : Rebecca's Notebook ... by Daphne Du Maurier

In the mood to curl up on the couch or lie in bed and read a really good book about a really good book?  

Author, Daphne du Maurier (1906 – 1989) was home-schooled and also educated in Paris, France. Most of her bestselling novels were set in Cornwall, where she lived for most of her life. 

Her novel, "Rebecca", is a dark, moody, mysterious love story!

"The Rebecca Notebook and Other Memories" is a revealing look at how du Maurier wrote this story.  It's a book about a really good book!  (A book which has been adapted to film more than once.  I liked the film version that was directed by Alfred Hitchock, which starred Joan Fontaine.  It's a worthwhile addition to one's personal video library.)

Book Recommendation : Women in History : Razia Sultana of India (Reblog)

**COMMENT: If you want to learn about women in history, this is the best blog ever!! Not only is it visually attractive and appealing, but the posts - so informative, intriguing and fascinating - will never disappoint you.

Book below not mentioned at the blog post, but suggested if interested in other women like Razia, the Queen of India.  It's a picture book suggested for ages 5 and up.  I'm older than 5 which puts me in the "and up" group of readers.  Picture books are wonderful quick reads and are just like a primer on a particular topic.  They usually have great illustrations and the non-fiction books present the info like a quick summary.  It whets your appetite and if you choose to do further research, you can search for books in the Juvenile/Young Adults section of the library for a more mature advanced reading level.

Reblogging. Excellent book review by Cynthia Rodrigues Manchekar, a member of the Authentic Blogger Group on Facebook. One of my friends is a die-hard John Grisham fan and her one-liner summary review for this particular book was a hook! She described it as: “A courtroom drama that just might depose John Grisham .” Had to know more!

This is debut novel for author Todd Johnson. Here is a striking statement from her review that peaks your interest: “... Todd has shown enough talent here to depose John Grisham as the reigning king of courtroom dramas. … Because Todd is a Christian author, there's more to The Deposit Slip than the pursuit of justice alone. Former Slave Who Sued Master For Back Wages!

Since it's February – Black History Month - Americans usually use the entire month to shine the spotlight on the contributions of black or African Americans, I am reminded of a fascinating article about a woman named Belinda, a former slave who sued her owner/master for back wages and WON!!!

Brenda Barnes is a writer who crossed my path via Wizzley.com. Even though she only contributed two articles, the subject matter discussed is worth recycling.

When you visit the articles, you become instantly mesmerized.  The information is fascinating reading, but the layout and presentation of the images that complement the content is absolutely exquisite! This particular link is to a mini-bio of the famous fabulist, whom we all know as Aesop, but whom we also don’t know very much about.  (???)  To put it in Tolovaj’s words:  "… his fables are much more clear than his biography."

After reading the article I was moved to remark that if Aesop’s fables are an indication of his character,  he would definitely have been included in my circle of friends. :)

In the Mood for a Romance Novel?

She started it! There are those who say that Kathleen Woodiwiss pioneered the historical romance genre. No matter who gets credits, just be glad there are thousands of romance novels to get lost in!  They make for good reading on a rainy day, a winter's day, late at night … practically any time that you want or need some quality “me” time. Agree?

Book Suggestions: Mystery , History or Ghost Story?

Peter Ackroyd is a writer, in more ways than one: biographer, historian, poet, novelist. People like to describe him as eccentric.  Mr. Ackroyd is a bit of a recluse, likes to drink, and still writes longhand. Some people consider that type of behavior somewhat peculiar. But he is without a doubt a prolific writer and has written so many books you may not know where to begin. 

Suggest you start with The Trial of Elizabeth Cree; it’s a murder mystery set in 1880 Victorian London.

Or … you could try to tackle his voluminous works of the History of England or his retelling of Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales.

If you like horror or spooky stories or you want to get into the spirit of the Halloween season, maybe his collection of English ghost stories might be fun!
