Entertainment: Music: Throwback: Vanessa L. Williams : The Right Stuff (1988)

Hello! Thanks for visiting. We're doing a little bit of "housekeeping". Several posts published via this blog and tagged "entertainment" are being moved to their new blog home. Apologize for the inconvenience.

Entertainment: Music: Throwback: Peter Gabriel - Shock The Monkey

Having fun with this short post celebrating a throwback.  It's a music video that is great to share any day of the week.  Not just for Throwback Thursday.  Where my Peter Gabriel fans AT?

Entertainment History: Gene Kelly was a Heart Throb

Have always loved Gene Kelly (1912 - 1996). The dancer with muscles like Popeye the Sailor.  According to the Urban Dictionary (which I'm now finding myself referring to as often as Merriam Webster), this is the Top Definition of a "heartthrob":

A person of superior physical quality who inspires amorous emotions of the opposite sex.
Yep! That would be Gene Kelly! Loved this guy!!

Gene Kelly

Enviously watching him dance effortlessly with all his leading ladies and Jerry Mouse, and adoring him dancing all by himself in the rain.

He created such wonderful childhood memories for me.

Have to save this tweet, share this video, and also sharing a link to a site for loyal fans, aptly named Gene Kelly Fans.

Witchcraft and Witch Hunting : Past and Present

There was a dark period in the history of mankind when witch-hunting was the order of the day. It began with official approval from Pope Innocent VII in 1484 and continued until around the 17th century when it reached its climax in England, Scotland, and America.  That was the past.

This is the present.  It’s the 21st century. We’re all much more civilized and intelligent than those people were back then. Aren’t we? (O.o)  Nobody is going to whip us up into frenzied mania and have us pointing a finger of accusation at someone, torturing a confession out of them, and still putting them to death for being a witch!

The past is in the past. Fortunately, my only exposure to witches and witchcraft was and is wearing a costume on Halloween or watching the Wizard of Oz. These days, most people like me limit themselves to adding collectibles like the reproductions pictured below of Glinda, the Good Witch of the North to their wish list; or sitting at home and watching The Wizard of Oz on DVD or Amazon Instant Video. Can you believe it has been 75 years? The movie was released in 1939. Listening to Judy Garland sing “Over the Rainbow” never gets old. Might be a good idea to plan an afternoon or evening watching the original movie classic; the Walt Disney prequel, Oz The Great and Powerful; and The Wiz, starring Diana Ross and the late Michael Jackson.

Hot spicy and crispy samosas are a delicious fun food to prepare and eat any time;  oven-baked or deep-fried.  The only difficulty you'll face is how to restrain yourself from eating too many.  They are hard to resist.  :)

How to make irresistible hot n spicy samosas

How many samosas can you wolf down!?

Society and Culture: Are Secret Societies a Threat?

Did you hear?  BeyoncĂ© and Jay-Z are members of the Illuminati.

Uh-huh. And this strikes fear in me because … ???  ... WHY?

Well, at least now I get Ray Romano’s joke about them being the most powerful couple in America. :)  But Jay-Z and his lovely wife, BeyoncĂ© are probably laughing way harder than everybody else.

Read an article about so-called secret societies – Freemasons, Rosicrucian Order, Illuminati, etc.

Top 5 Secret Societies |Wizzley.com

This provides a wealth of material if anyone wants something to write about it. But to take these groups seriously? WHY?

  • Are they dangerous??
  • Because they have a secret??
  • Because they are secretive??
  • Because they might also have a lot of money and possibly some influence on persons in high places and can change the course of the world??!!!! And you have no control over it??

Gimme a break! Who doesn’t have a secret??

Rich or poor. Between dreaming and having your own secrets, can’t nobody control you!!

**** Hmmm … this is kind of an afterthought but … UM … Such type organizations could be a threat to the members. Everything being so hush hush - if a crime were committed, where would they go for justice? Maybe the Cosa Nostra probably holds court on the weekends. (O.o)

A Quick Review of Filinta Mustafa, an Ottoman Detective TV Series

I always enjoy a good mystery TV series, and a historical period drama series. Started watching one on Netflix that is set in 19th century Istanbul, Ottoman Empire. Very happy to find this series because I am curious about Istanbul and enjoy going back in time to view a recreation of life in previous centuries before we had cars and cell phones.  Published my review at RationalMind.club.

MOVIE REVIEW: The Equalizer (2014) - I Heard That Movie Was...

(UPDATE July 3, 2019)  Apologies.  Reblogged an awesome post which supplied a review of "The Equalizer", a 2014 movie which starred Denzel Washington; however, the blog publisher decided to remove the content.  (Also Google+, the social network where I found the link, shut down.)  I'm forced to share some alternative links if you are still interested in a movie review.  Below are links to reviews by others of this disappointing Denzel Washington film.  Critics were not all that pleased.  "Lacks gravitas". ~ Roger Ebert

So let me complete the sentence.

I heard that movie was AWFUL!  Yet they made a sequel. (O.o)  The Equalizer 2 (2018)

Reblogging this from a movie review blog. There used to be an old TV show called “The Equalizer” that was a really good show! So when they started advertising this new movie with Mr. Washington, it got me all excited.

Found the link to this blog post which was shared via Google+ community and thought to myself: 'Eh! Let me check it out!'

Great review!!!  But of course, it's on my list of movies to watch anyway.  Don't really need persuading.  Like to keep my finger on the pulse of Denzel Washington. Been following his acting career for years.  It was a great review but the blog is unpublished.   The blog publisher is Justin Morales.  It's a fairly new blog (first posts dated April 2014), but he's off to a good start!

Entertainment: Celebrities: In Memory of: Doris Day (1922 - 2019)

Must say good-bye to "America's girl next door" and Hollywood legend, Doris Day.  She had a major influence on my childhood development.  She charmed me.  That was her appeal.  I think she charmed everyone; publicly and privately.  I loved all of her movies.  No really.  There is not one movie she starred in that I did not like.

For me, the most memorable movie was the one where she sang "Que sera, sera" and she had to land that airplane: The Man Who Knew Too Much.  It was a departure from her usually light-hearted comedy roles.  That movie was very serious and she played her part quite convincingly.  I have wonderful memories of this fine actress.

She wasn't included in My Top 10 List of Iconic Female Celebrities' even though she suits the definition for "iconic". It's because she deserves a spotlight all her own.

My Favorite Movies Starring Elizabeth Taylor (1932 – 2011)

Remembering one of the Hollywood stars from back in my day who is no longer with us. Elizabeth Taylor (1932 - 2011).

There are three motion pictures starring this iconic legendary beauty that made an impression on me as a little girl and as a teenager:

National Velvet (1944) ; Giant (1956) ; Cleopatra (1963)

Do you have a favorite Liz Taylor film?

Entertainment : Bollywood Movie Review : Karam (2005)

It never fails, no matter what online social blogging or writing community I join, the discussion always gets around to “favorites”. Favorite song. Favorite movie. Favorite book. And then, of course, the “faves” can vary. Favorite song from a movie. Favorite book adapted to film. Favorite soundtrack to a movie. On and on and on.

My husband introduced me to foreign films and in particular, to Bollywood films. If you watch Hindi movies you know that there are literally thousands (possibly even millions) of them with all kinds of wonderful music and songs. There is this one movie which stars Bollywood beauty Priyanka Chopra and Bollywood hunk John Abraham, where she sings the most beautiful haunting melody. Heard that song the first time and it hooked me! Instant favorite!! To me it was the best vocal performance ever by Ms. Chopra.

That's it. That's my review. This movie is a love story. It is intense! The bad guys are really bad. When the bad guys confront each other, you're happy you're not stuck in the middle. Your heart bleeds for every innocent victim that has the misfortune to cross paths with them. So when a bad guy is married to a good girl … ______. If I fill out the blank, it'll spoil the movie for those who may not have seen it. Even if you don't have time to watch the film, at least take a few minutes to listen to Ms. Chopra's performance of a song that is definitely on my favorites list.

The 2005 film is “Karam”.

The song is “Tinka Tinka”.

Jackie Evancho - YouTube Channel

Just subscribed to this music channel. Yeah, I'm late to the party.  Should have done it ages ago.  But better late than never!

It is such a pleasure to see her continue to blossom and grow.  I know the mention of this flower likely provokes another cherished memory in your mind ("Sound of Music"), but it would not that far of a stretch to compare her to edelweiss

Here is another magical performance. It's on her album Awakening.

● The Sound of Music : What Became of the Von Trapp Children?

It's 2017; approximately 2 years since these events occurred. I missed the entire 2015 Oscars Awards and the next day's entertainment news reports had nothing but praise for Lady Gaga who delivered a flawless performance of songs from The Sound of Music which were first performed by Julie Andrews.

War Movies - The Green Berets and Others

Are you a John Wayne fan? If so, sure hope you will not feel disappointed when I say that I do not share your admiration. I am not a John Wayne fan at all. Sounds un-American, but it’s the truth. Never really liked John Wayne movies, particularly when he portrayed a person in the military because he never served. Some want to imply or hint that he was a draft-dodger. I would feel uncomfortable taking it that far. Besides, many think that the roles he played as a person serving in the armed forces of the United States was great for the morale of the real soldiers. So dissing him for not serving would be kind of unfair because boosting the morale of a soldier far away from home is an admirable service and an act of patriotism. At any rate, this article is not about Mr. Wayne. It is about war movies. Read on.

When trying to compile a listing of war movies that left a mark in my memory, since I grew up during the Vietnam era, The Green Berets (1968), made my initial list. However, it was subsequently eliminated.

The Green Berets, which starred John Wayne, is about the war in Vietnam. It was taken off my list on account of I could not think of any memorable quotes. On the other hand, the words in theme song were memorable.

Song Lyrics: “Put silver wings on my son’s chest. These are wings of America’s best. One hundred men will test today. But only three, will wear the green beret.”

Seven (7) movies did make the cut (by my standards).

Entertainment : Movie Versions : Annie or Annie? Finney or Foxx?

Always used to read the comic strip about Little Orphan Annie as a child. Saw the movie version “Annie”, released 1982 which starred two of my favorite actors, Albert Finney and Carol Burnett. Very much enjoyed it and would recommend watching it. Can't believe this film already celebrated its 20th anniversary!

By contrast: Never saw the film remake version with Jamie Foxx, released 2014. But it's a musical too. [ Watch trailer for Annie (2014) ] Mike Carter publishes a movie review blog called Back Seat Viewer / Movie Reviews and he thought they “did really good with the update while giving plenty of respectful nods to the original material”. Based on his review and recommendation you might want to put this family-friendly flick on your watchlist or in your video library.
