Honoring John Glenn (1921 - 2016) AND His Wife Annie Glenn (1920 - 2020)

This post was first published at this blog in 2016. (content below the “***”.) It is being reposted to honor the widow of John Glenn. She was one of the victims of COVI-19. She lived to be 100 years old and left a legacy of her own.

+ In Memory of Annie Glenn (1920 – 2020)

Published this blog post November 2014.

An American "first" was NOT on that list.  I did not realize my significant omission until today when it was announced on the radio that this prominent citizen has departed.

  • John Glenn, first American astronaut to orbit the earth.

Adding this fact on to my previous blog post about "firsts" and sharing some additional info below.

Why Should We Be Thankful For Social Media? (Especially Twitter)

Is there is one thing we can all thank social media for? Yes! QUOTES!

No matter how you’re feeling, ...
No matter who you’re trying to impress, inspire and motivate, ...
No matter if you just need that perfect statement to begin or end your speech or your sermon …

Just scan social media posts.  Especially Twitter!

There’s got to be a quote for it!

  • Tech developers say there's an app for that.
  • Senator Elizabeth Warren says there's a plan for that.
  • With social media, whatever "that" is, there's a quote for that.

In many instances, you will find just the quote you were looking for and in some instances, you’ll find a nice image that goes with it. It might be a photo or drawing of the person who is being quoted. It might just be a pretty picture or a thought-provoking image that is perfectly suited to the quote.

Whether you find the words or the words with an appropriate picture, you are bound to find the quotes that will keep you going! Words that make you happy, make you thankful, make you stronger, make you think. Words that help you prioritize, give you perspective, focus you, and push you forward.

To that last tweet, I quote myself: “NOT! Uhh … you posted this on social media.” (O.o)

Quotes and humor keep me going. ☺
Hope these quotes keep you going too!

Entertainment: Movie Review: "The Preacher's Wife" (1996)

In the mood for a movie that is charming, silly, and sweet?  Well, this film is perfect!  The Preacher's Wife ” is a movie that starred the late Whitney Houston (1963 - 2012) and Denzel Washington.  It's a delightful remake of the 1947 classic which starred Cary Grant and Loretta Young, "The Bishop's Wife".

Yeah! I know. No angel Dudley mentioned in the Bible.

Come to think of it? No angel mentioned anywhere except for this movie!

Ms. Houston's character is married to a preacher. Hence the film's title. Her marital relationship could use some "outside" or even "heavenly" intervention if it is to be saved.

The Preacher's Wife

The movie was OK. Not worth an academy award nomination. But the soundtrack makes it worth watching. Especially this particular song: Step by Step.

“Step by step. … bit by bit … stone by stone … brick by brick … Don't give up! …”

Get to Know the Blog Publisher With These 5 Random Facts

I have been publishing this blog for over 5 years and the stats say My Blog Stop! has over 1200 subscribers.  The thought has occurred to me that perhaps my readers may want to get to know me a little bit.  Well!  Here goes!

(1)  I’ve never been to heaven or Oklahoma.  But I do like The Beatles.  (I make corny references to songs and movies in a regular conversation all the time.  LOL.)

(2)  When I was about 7 or 8 years old, I misspelled a word once because I had copied the way my father spelled it.  My teacher marked me wrong and told me my father was WRONG!  I talked back to her … in defense of my beloved father …and was sent to the Principal’s office for being rude and discourteous.  (Although the principal laughed and said she understood because she knew my dad.  However, she still had to punish me because I couldn’t be allowed to get away with talking back to the teacher in front of the other students.  I took my punishment defiantly and proudly. 🙂 )  About 10 years later I visited my father’s country and what do you know?  That’s how they spell that word in his country.  So!  My dad was RIGHT!!  I felt so vindicated. LOL.  Wish I could have shown my teacher. 🙂

(3)  Growing up in Miami, Florida, I experienced a lot of hurricanes.  The hurricanes did not upset me. What upset me was the fact that the names of the hurricanes were all FEMALE.  I never complained openly about it though.  But I guess somebody complained because when I got older they started giving the storms MALE names.  Hurricane Bob (1979) was the first hurricane with a man’s name.  (Fun Trivia) Bob was not a memorable storm.  Hurricanes Cleo and Camille KICKED BUTT!!  I remember them!

(4)  We have several video games in our house.  I have never played a video game.  Not by myself or with any of my kids.  I don’t know how to work the controllers.  LOL.

(5)  I had a father, 7 brothers, 1 husband and 5 sons and to this day, I do NOT know how to tie a necktie.  Frankly, since I wasn’t going to be wearing them, I never saw the need to learn.  Besides!  Why should I bother to learn?  They sell those clip-on neckties with the tie knot already done.  🙂  That was my flawless logic and I was sticking to it!  Then one day, one of my daughters said she was putting together an outfit that reflected her personality.  She asked if she could borrow one of her dad’s neckties and if I could help her tie it.  I didn’t see that coming!  She had to figure out how to tie that tie herself.  LOL.  🙂

What is a Subscriber via Feedburner?

The content below the asterisks (* * *) was first published in January 2015.  It was not written with the intent to be misleading or to misinform.  It was just my understanding and my experience.

UPDATE:  It's 2020 and I have continued using this fabulous Feedburner tool!  It serves many purposes and has proven to an invaluable tool in my Webmasters Tool Kit.  Lately, I discovered that there is a way to view the "Subscribers".  Actual eMails of subscribers who signed up to receive updates.  So!  Everything that I said in this post (below) ... I TAKE IT ALL BACK!! I can not tell you how gratifying it is to see a valid eMail address and to know that my updates are being distributed.  YAY!!  Woo Hoo!!!  If you have not been using the Feedburner tool to gain subscribers for your blog, then the question is:  WHY NOT?

* * *
What is a Subscriber?  The question is rhetorical.  Everybody knows a subscriber is someone who subscribes to sumthin!

Do you use the Google FeedBurner tool to burn feeds for your blog or blogs? There are several ways to get people to subscribe to your blog feed.

Do you see the little chicklet with the heart?
I heart FeedBurner

This little chicklet is just one of the ways.

I'm okay with the chicklet and I really really love the Feedburner. But I noticed something interesting about My Feeds almost right from the very start. The Subscriber count. Yeah. (???) The number looks questionable? ... UM?  unreasonable? ... mysterious? I'm going to settle on the word squirrelly. Even though my spellchecker indicates that it's not a word.

The numbers don't seem to make sense! So I'm thinking, they must be some sort of secret code and I've always had my theory about Rocky and Bullwinkle. So that's why I decided squirrelly was the best way to describe my subscriber count. Anyway I found the answer to my puzzle, as to why the numbers look undecipherable.

I am so glad that I read the response, because it clarifies everything!!   I love the Feedburner tool.  It is a valuable helpful tool and I will continue to use it until Google tells me it's no longer free OR for whatever reason OR for no reason at all, I just won't be allowed to use it.  It's theirs.  They own it.  They can tell me to take a hike!

But I don't think I'm going to rely on the number of subscribers who supposedly hold their breath and wake up each morning checking their eMail messages or waiting to receive notifications that I've published another blog post!!

WHY?  Because based on the response I read, my non-geek reaction is:

Oh!  That's why the number looks so funky?
IT'S BOGUS??  (O.o)

Who cares?  Love that feedburner!
Alternative are available.  But it serves my purposes!

My Rant About Employers Doing Unofficial Background Checks via Social Media Networks

Here is something that is being done but it's wrong.
  • Not asking if you think it's wrong.
  • Not opening the matter up for discussion.
  • Not wanting your thoughts on if you think it's wrong.
I'm telling you … if it's true … if it's being done … IT'S WRONG!!

Did you know that Employers often look for information about prospective Employees in Social Media Networks?

No doubt you must have heard a lot of clamor about it.
* * *

This matter is not up for discussion or debate.

Work is work. Social is social.

Social encompasses personal and private, allowed in by invitation only.  And don't give me any mumbo jumbo about my social profile being set to "public".

Work is … whatever work is and the "stuff" at work don't belong to me. It's just a job. No need to bring it home with me cause it's not mine!

The boundary lines are drawn. OK?

* * *

If you are hiring me because you want me to crunch numbers in your Accounting department, and you have already listed the necessary Education requirements, skills, qualifications in your job description …

I applied …
- you contacted me for an interview …
- - based on my application or resume …
- - - you are thinking of hiring me …

WHY do you need look any further into my personal and private life? You're going to do a criminal background check.

(Not talking about credit checks, arrest records, etc. - which in order for the potential employer to obtain access to - signed release forms by the potential employee are required.)

Number One:
Suppose you don't hire me? What does that mean? That means you done got all up in my grill, learning all kinds of things about me you didn't really need to know, and now how I do know what you're going to do with that “knowledge” and “information”?

Number Two:
If you do hire me, we need to AGREE on PAY, the working conditions and the job description.

The work contract will be a regular 9 to 5, right?  With some flexibility.

As long as there is no problem with my work that's being presented as a finished product, you're satisfied and I get paid! Right?

Let's get this straight, Mr. or Ms. Employer.
  • Before 9 and after 5 (or established working hours), you need to be living your own life!!
  • Not having your nose all up in mine! RIGHT???
When I come into work, it should be “Good morning!' and then we get to work.

When I leave work for the day, it should be “Good evening or good night!”

It should be clearly understood:
  • I am leaving work. If you have not been invited to my house, DO NOT FOLLOW ME HOME!! I will have you arrested for stalking!
* * *

Apologize for the rant. I started reading an article (just trying to get some of my kids married off) and blew a gasket when I honed in on a sentence about employers checking stuff on social networks (these networks include dating sites, etc.).  I needed somewhere to put my thoughts.

OK. So anyway … this information below is also useless to me but maybe somebody else might find it helpful. Here's a link to a free article on:

October 5 is International Teachers Day! 1st Week of May is Teacher Appreciation Week!

Every day is a good day to honor a good teacher.  AGREE?

Days set aside to honor teachers
May 3rd is National Teacher Appreciation Day; and in fact, each year an entire week is devoted to teacher appreciation.  For 2020, May 4 - 8 is Teacher Appreciation Week.

World Teachers’ Day, also known as International Teachers Day, is held annually on October 5 since 1994, commemorates teacher organizations worldwide.

You can’t put a price tag on an excellent teacher that inspires you to achieve excellence.

You can’t even say they are worth their weight in gold times 10 bazillion because that estimate would be far too low. I can’t speak for others but as for me, all of my teachers were a blessing and to this day, I am reaping the benefits from the education they gave me.

A teacher for another one of my daughters recommended this book by Dr. Dyer, when she was in elementary school. It’s a cute poem that helps build a child’s self-esteem. It’s a good book if for no other reason than it uses the words “unstoppable” and “soar” in the title. 🙂 Published a review via HUBPages.

This final link share is not mine but if we’re going to talk teacher we can not overlook the importance of the impact technology has on our education system.

During my childhood, the essentials to prepare you for life used to be the 3 Rs – reading, writing, and arithmetic.

Now there are 3 Rs and 2 Cs. “C” for Coding and the other “C” for Cyber Security. No point denying it or ignoring it.

These are necessary skills that should be taught as a part of the educational curriculum for preparing a child to become a productive member of society and the workforce.

Most Beautiful Islands: Croatia-Dalmatian Islands (REBLOG)

So very pleased to share this link about the Croatia-Dalmatian Islands. Found the World's Most Beautiful Islands blog a couple of years back. It appears that neither the blog or the Facebook page has been updated since 2012, but no matter as the information provided about the most beautiful islands in the world is enough to whet your appetite and make you hunger and thirst for more. Never been to Dalmatia but one reference to this place in the New Testament and ever since it has been on my wish list of  "Places I'd Like to Go.

Most Beautiful Islands: Croatia-Dalmatian Islands

(Link previously supplied for reblog had to be replaced as domain name was not renewed.  See below.)

When the Apostle Paul* was preparing for his execution in Rome, he sent final instructions and words of encouragement to Timothy, a young man he referred to as his “son in the faith”. He told him what he expected of him and what needed to be done to carry on the missionary efforts. In what is believed to be one of his final letters to the young minister, he made mention of his “other son”, Titus. He said that Titus was on his way to Dalmatia to continue spreading the gospel message. Just that one mention of the place and my heart was captivated.

Budget and Survival Skills versus In Sickness and In Health

The alternate title for this post is:
“Am I being callous, insensitive, lacking empathy, unsympathetic, cruel and unkind?”

Perusing my eMail Inbox and quickly glanced at a question in one of the messages that made me chuckle. It was about what your knee-jerk reaction is when faced with financial problems.

  • When experiencing financial difficulties does your instinct immediately prod you to cut back?

Well? I guess so! But more than likely my “cutbacks” happen because there's no money! Not sure my “instinct” was necessary. ((O.o))

◊ ◊ ◊ ◊ ◊ ◊ ◊ ◊ ◊ ◊

On a serious note, the question provoked my memory recall. A while back, was watching a popular talk show once and it was rather disturbing. It's disturbing that people who do things that don't make sense are always “ill”. This woman supposedly had an “illness”. She would buy stuff she didn't really need!

  • If you're filthy rich and you have large barns to store all of your worldly possessions, then it doesn't matter. You would be called a “shopaholic”.
  • If you bought a load of crap and had the decency to give it away because you realized you weren't really using it, you'd be called “charitable”.
But when loads of crap are piled up in your house to the point that the place is a junk heap and you and your partner can barely see the bed you both lie down to sleep on and you're making your mate physically ill … then you're sick!

A team was sent in to clean the place up and the team actually got sick from breathing in toxic stuff – dust, spores, mites, who knows what! - from piles of clothing, etc. that had been lying around the home for years. Items bought from the store that still had the price tags on them!!!

Listening to the interviewer questioning this woman as to why she was buying things she didn't need and her response was … (not an exact quote): “Because the blouses were on sale and there were different colors available, so I bought one in each color.”

The interviewer turns to question the husband and it seems he gave her credit cards for her spending purposes. You know? Grocery shopping, health and beauty needs, wardrobe necessities, things for practical living, and maybe an occasional gift or guilty pleasure luxury product.

Started thinking to myself. Don't know who the sick person is. The wife or the husband? Seems to me the CURE was taking away the credit cards. YOU CAN'T BUY NOTHING IF YOU AIN'T GOT NO MONEY!!!

It really perturbs me, that people do dumb stuff and get to write it off as an “illness”. OR … am I being insensitive to this poor woman who is clearly not poor because she can afford to buy things she has no need for, has no place to put them, and never even blinked at the thought about making a donation to a charity!!

(Just a rant. Thank you for letting me shout it out.)

* * *

P.S. After shouting it out, friends in my social network told me that I was being a little bit callous and insensitive and that it was NOT OK.  If so, then I apologize.

May is Mental Health Month and That's OK!

Why I Like Publishing Articles via Medium.com

"Medium is an online publishing platform developed by Twitter co-founder Evan Williams, and launched in August 2012. It is legally owned by A Medium Corporation. The platform is an example of social journalism, having a hybrid collection of amateur and professional people and publications, or exclusive blogs or publishers on Medium and is regularly regarded as a blog host."  (Source: Wikipedia)

I'm an "amateur" freelance writer.  I started publishing content at Medium.com several years back.  I haven't been banned yet!  😂   They are gracious enough to not only allow my republished content, but it's OK if I leave comments.  The Medium writers contribute articles that are very enlightening, on a wide range of topics from science and technology to religion and philosophy to books and music and more.  One of the "professional people" even asked if they could publish one of my articles in their publication.  I was so honored.

Blogging Advice: My Twitter Analytics Review ~ Top Tweets 1st Quarter of 2020

This blog, My Blog Stop!, was not my first Blogger blog.  But it is my oldest Blogger blog.  Google owns this platform and they are very generous.  They will allow and indeed encourage bloggers, no matter their experience level (newbie, intermediate, advanced) to start blogging.  The publishing platform is free and if your blog qualifies it can be monetized to display Ad Sense ads.

Using this blogging tool is so easy I became emboldened to start publishing several blogs.  I have experimented with the various templates to try to customize and create my own "blog personality".  The links of the blogs I am currently publishing using Blogspot are shown on my Blogger profile.

Twenty-Twenty in the eye doctor's world means you have a great vision.  I like to think that regarding my blogging projects, my 2020 vision of continuing and moving forward is "great".  But in order to move forward, you should probably take a look back.

I created companion Twitter accounts to promote my blogs.  In the profile of the Twitter account, I share the link to my Blogger blog and tweet links to my blog posts as well.  The Blogspot/Twitter connection is proving to be very useful.  I analyzed my Twitter activity for the 1st Quarter of 2020 and shared them at the blogs that are showing the most promise.  Are you curious?

Small Town USA - Greenville, Texas (near Dallas)

Back in 2011, Forbes magazine prepared a TOP 10 List of cities considered to be “economic superstars”. They were recognized as a “superstar” because they have relatively low housing prices, and somehow experienced an increase in new jobs, and managed to keep their economies afloat. The List included 4 Texas cities. - Austin, Texas was Number 1; - San Antonio was Number 4 on the List; - Houston, Number 5; and - Dallas, Number 7.
- Read more at:  "The Next Big Boom Towns in the U.S." https://web.archive.org/web/20161202135817/http://finance.yahoo.com/news/pf_article_113083.html

Austin is the state capital; and in the same way, Cedar Park, Texas benefits from being a part of the Greater Austin community, Greenville, Texas is a “small town” that likely benefits from their proximity to Dallas, one of the places named as an economic superstar. Downtown Greenville is an easy 45 minute trip from Dallas, Texas.

The 2015 estimated population projection for this city is less than 30,000. That's close enough to meeting my definition of having small-town charm.

Greenville, TX is north of Dallas in Northeast, Texas.

Map found at greenville-texas.com

Here are just a few facts to peak your interest in this colorful U.S. city.

Greenville was established in 1846. It was famous for a sign that read "Welcome to Greenville, The Blackest Land, The Whitest People"

This sign was hung over the main street in the downtown area from the 1920s to the 1960s. Between the 1960s and 1970s, the sign was changed to "The Blackest Land, The Greatest People"

There has been a dispute over the interpretation of those words.  Some believed the sign indicated a racist attitude of the people in the city.  Others insisted that "whitest" was not referring to their race but rather their purity, honesty, and integrity of the people who lived there. The color "white" is symbolic for purity, is it not?

Eventually, the sign was just taken down. The fertile black soil of the area resulted in excellent cotton production, and Greenville became known as the "cotton capital of the world".

Times have changed for the better and the new attitude is reflected in the City's vision statement:

“The vision of the City of Greenville is to build on our hometown values and rich heritage as a diverse community, by providing cost-effective, quality services to create an enjoyable vibrant place where families and business choose to live, grow and prosper.”
