Book Review: THE DEPOSIT SLIP (Reblog)

Reblogging. Excellent book review by Cynthia Rodrigues Manchekar, a member of the Authentic Blogger Group on Facebook. One of my friends is a die-hard John Grisham fan and her one-liner summary review for this particular book was a hook! She described it as: “A courtroom drama that just might depose John Grisham .” Had to know more!

This is debut novel for author Todd Johnson. Here is a striking statement from her review that peaks your interest: “... Todd has shown enough talent here to depose John Grisham as the reigning king of courtroom dramas. … Because Todd is a Christian author, there's more to The Deposit Slip than the pursuit of justice alone. There is also the need for forgiveness and reconciliation ...”

Love courtroom drama?
Then this should be an addition to your reading list.

Vintage Moments in Entertainment History : Sophia Loren and Charles Aznavour

I collect vintage stuff.  That's why I joined this awesome online community.  Find more gems like the one below in Vintage, Posters &.. - Google+. They don't just share entertainment, celebrities pics, etc. They share really rare moments in history via vintage photographs you probably won't see anywhere else. Not all the photos are black and white, but the ones that are really add to that "moment in time" often captured by an unknown talented photographer.

Why do I like this photo so much?  For one thing, I'm loyal Sophia Loren fan.  I did a Top Ten List in one of my previous posts and included her in my collection of Iconic Female Celebrities.  Eh! Everybody knows Sophia Loren.  But the fact is, if it weren't for "The Truth About Charlie" movie* with Mark Wahlberg and Thandie Newton, I may have never known who Charles Aznavour was.  But I'm thankful.  His music is great for a romantic evening.  😍

* FYI.  That Wahlberg/Newton film was a remake of a classic old movie, "Charade", a 1963 flick which starred two of my favorite actors from back in the day - Audrey Hepburn and Cary Grant, which did not include songs by this popular French singer.  So the film remake actually added a nice touch!  Audrey Hepburn (1929 – 1993) is also on my list of Iconic Female Celebrities.  Love her too! 💟

Americans and Capital Punishment | You're Either For It OR Against It

Do you read “The Economist”? They publish very worthwhile reading material. Food for thought. On this particular topic, for many, however, there is not too much think about. Most people have drawn their line in the sand and they are either for capital punishment or against it.

My friend Jo Harrington is AGAINST the death penalty and provides more than ample information to support her position.
In the end, though her arguments are powerful and thought-provoking, my position is FOR and I can not be dissuaded. Not even the pope can persuade me.  (Pope Francis Declares Death Penalty Unacceptable in All Cases - The New York Times) While the guilty criminals sit on death row awaiting execution, it gives them time to reflect on the events which brought them to their soon to be final destination - events in their life and their life or lives of those who are no longer with us because of them - and maybe they can come to grips with the fact they are only receiving their comeuppance.

Poor Eve.  Mother of the first murderer and the first murder victim.  In that particular case, The Judge showed mercy and spared the murderer's life.  The debate continues.

How America - Can And Will - Abolish The Death Penalty

New Hampshire has just failed to abolish the death penalty-by one vote. Given that the Granite State has not actually executed anyone since 1939, you might think this doesn't matter much. But, obviously, it matters to the one man on death row in New Hampshire, a cop-killer called Michael Addison.

Has It Been 5 Years Already? My 5 Year Anniversary with HUBPages

Received this is my eMail today.

You have hit a pretty impressive milestone - your 5 Year Anniversary on the HubPages Network! You've stuck with us through thick and thin. You've braved the writer's block, rode the traffic waves, and hopefully made some lifelong friends. You are truly a veteran Hubber. Happy Hubbiversary!

Fun fact: Couples traditionally exchange wood gifts on fifth anniversaries. Maybe today is the day for getting a gorgeous new writing desk!

Has It Been 5 Years Already?

I won't be getting a writing desk.  Nevertheless ...

Awesome sauce!

1999 is Past. 2013 is Gone. But 3012 is Still a Long Way Off! Right?

1999 is past. 2013 is gone.  2016 and the following 8 years will come and go in a flash!  But 3012 is still a long way off! Right?

Visualize this. You, a typical AAC (average American citizen), a Student at an American institution of higher learning in the YEAR (??) - timeline somewhere between 2000 and 2012 - have been chosen to spend 15 minutes with the President of the United States (thee most powerful Leader of the free world [or at least he or she would like think so]). It is the 21st century. 1999 came and went.

No more partying like it's 1999.  The party is over. You - Mr. or Ms. Student - have been given a mission.

Your mission ~ should you decide to accept ~ is to identify the two most important issues facing your generation. What two things would you choose to discuss and why? No. This is not a trick question. No. I don't think this question has ever been put quite this way for a Miss America or Miss Universe contestant. Furthermore, your choices have been narrowed down considerably.

- A) War and Peace
- B) The Budget and Taxes
- C) Racism and Crime (includes illegal immigrants)
- D) Health and Education
- D) Fake News (and squiggly lines)
- F) Making the World Safe for Democracy and Nothing Else Matters.

Do not Believe Justin Bieber. You do not have until 3012, you will need more than a Beauty And A Beat; and besides that, Mr. Bieber is from Canada.. :)

So let's go! You got 15 minutes. The clock is ticking! * * *

Celebrating Asian-American Contemporary Artists

Giana Nguyen-Foster is a Vietnamese-American singer/songwriter.  We connected via Facebook back in 2011, the same year her debut solo EP, “For Now”, had been released. At that time she was promoting herself by collaborating with other musicians and performing at shows in the Southern California area. Her career plans were altered slightly when she found out that she was pregnant. She gave birth to a beautiful baby boy. Raising her son is now a top priority, but music is still her passion, so she partnered with music educators to open Dancing Keys Music Studio which is located in Irvine, California. This way she stays involved in the music industry and has time to devote to her family responsibilities.

Giana also serves as a board member with VAALA, Vietnamese American Arts and Letters Association, and introduced me to the work of several Asian-American artists. In the USA, May is Asian-Pacific American Heritage Month.  It is an honor to celebrate the contributions of our citizens of Asian-Pacific ancestry and showcase the work of these extremely talented contemporary artists.

Holidays and Celebrations : Happy Cinco de Mayo!

Although my current residence is Austin, Texas and this city has many citizens of Mexican descent and Cinco de Mayo is celebrated, there isn't much for me to tell because nobody ever told me much about it. For those who might be interested in this holiday, below are a few links of interest.

Cinco de Mayo | Mexican history - Encyclopædia Britannica

This holiday is primarily observed by Mexican-Americans all over the United States to honor their heritage or roots. However, was born and raised in Miami, Florida and never heard of this day until we relocated to Texas.

Two other holidays celebrated in this state that were also unknown to me until we moved here: Texas Independence Day, March 2nd; and Juneteenth – June 19th.

Never knew anything about these special days. T.I.D. is unique to Texans but it's been said that Juneteenth is a worldwide celebration. Worldwide? Really?? Not sure what world I've been living in all this time, nevertheless … can no longer claim ignorance about any of these memorable events. There are important dots on the #timeline of #history of mankind and should not be ignored.  :)

I have several boards (over 50) and I've been trying to arrange them. I just tried a Pinterest feature that lets you arrange your boards: Alphabetical, Newest to Oldest, Oldest to Newest OR you can manually Drag and Drop your boards wherever! I may rearrange them again but for now, I think putting them in alpha order is best for visitors. I can see the boards in alpha order. What I want to know is:

Q1: How does a visitor to my Pinterest profile see them? Can you look at my Pinterest boards and tell me if you see them arranged in alphabetical order?

Q2: Is that feature available to allow a visitor to rearrange my boards the way they would like to see them? From New to Old, in Alpha Order, etc.
