March 2nd: Honoring a Uniquely Texan Holiday

“I have answered the demand with a cannon shot, and our flag still waves proudly from the walls. I shall never surrender or retreat.”

Who said that?  This guy!

This is a painting of William Barret Travis, who died at the Battle of the Alamo in 1836. (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

-William Barret Travis at the Alamo, 1836

Every year on March 2, Texans celebrate a holiday that is entirely and uniquely Texan”Texas Independence Day. The day marks the signing of the Texas Declaration of Independence at the Convention of 1836 at Washington-on-the-Brazos.The 59 delegates to the historic convention were a diverse group. Two delegates, José Francisco Ruiz and José Antonio Navarro, were native Mexicans. The rest were immigrants from other parts of Mexico, the United States, and Europe. Two-thirds of the delegates were less than forty years old.

The delegates “ and the people they represented “ had a clear goal. They sought to preserve the freedoms guaranteed to them under the Mexican Constitution, which had been lost under the dictatorship of President Antonio López de Santa Anna. They modeled their Declaration on the one signed in Philadelphia 60 years earlier, expressing their just grievances, determination to protect their freedoms, and vision for a new nation: the Republic of Texas.

Unlike the deliberations today in the U.S. Congress, the Texas Declaration of Independence was non-controversial and approved swiftly. The Unanimous Declaration of Independence by the Delegates of the People of Texas was signed on March 2, 1836. Five copies were sent to the towns of Bexar, Goliad, Nacogdoches, Brazoria, and San Felipe. Because there was no printing press in Washington-on-the-Brazos, the printer at San Felipe was ordered to print 1,000 copies in handbill form. The original copy was sent to the U.S. Department of State in Washington “ where it would stay for six decades before being returned to the land where it was written.

Even as the delegates signed this historic document, they knew their love of liberty might command the ultimate sacrifice. At that moment, less than 200 miles to the West, Santa Anna's army was laying siege to the Alamo. Just days earlier, its young commander, William Barret Travis, sent a letter addressed to the people of the Republic of Texas and all Americans. He wrote:

Fellow citizens and compatriots “ I am besieged, by a thousand or more of the Mexicans under Santa Anna “ I have sustained a continual Bombardment and cannonade for 24 hours and have not lost a man “ The enemy has demanded a surrender at discretion, otherwise, the garrison are to be put to the sword, if the fort is taken.

I have answered the demand with a cannon shot, and our flag still waves proudly from the walls “ I shall never surrender or retreat.

Then, I call on you in the name of Liberty, of patriotism and everything dear to the American character, to come to our aid, with all dispatch “ The enemy is receiving reinforcements daily and will no doubt increase to three or four thousand in four or five days.

If this call is neglected, I am determined to sustain myself as long as possible and die like a soldier who never forgets what is due to his own honor and that of his country “ Victory or Death!

The Travis Letter became a rallying cry for freedom across the young Republic, and though death came to the defenders of the Alamo, victory eventually came for the people of Texas. Not long after the fall of the Alamo, General Sam Houston and about 900 Texas soldiers defeated the larger Mexican army at the Battle of San Jacinto. The surprise attack was so successful that the battle lasted only 18 minutes, and the next day Santa Anna himself was captured. By this victory, Texans won the independence they had declared less than two months earlier.

Movie Review: The Judge (2014) | Robert Downey, Jr. and Robert Duvall (Reblog)

No matter what the title of the film is if you say the name of Robert Duvall, that makes my “Movies to Watch” list. It would be hard for this movie, The Judge(2014) to be bad (my opinion) since it has two powerhouse actors, both named Robert.

Robert Downey Jr. of Iron Man and Sherlock Holmes fame won me over with his portrayal of Charlie Chaplin.

Robert Duvall should be introduced as "The One and Only" or "The Incomparable".  If he were British, we'd probably be calling Sir Robert Duvall.  Mr. Duvall has been one of my favorite actors ever since “To Kill a Mockingbird”.  He wasn't the leading star in that movie either!  Gregory Peck may have won the Academy Award for "Best Actor" but Duvall's character was memorable and his performance was unforgettable.

Very happy to share the link to a movie review of "The Judge" by Cynthia Sylvestermouse.

She begins her post by stating:  "Rarely do I go to the theater to see a movie and come away feeling like I actually saw a movie worth viewing. It is especially rare for both my husband and myself to equally rave over a movie. ..."

In other words ... That was a gooooood movie!

Downey may have been given the top billing in this movie, but in my opinion, Duvall is the man!  :)

Ancient History: Modern Day Arabs and Their Father Abraham

Genealogy has been and always will be a topic of interest to human beings. We are all curious about our beginnings or origins. These days some even pay for expensive DNA tests to see if they can determine their ancestry. Others comb through paper documents, computerized records, etc. and/or combine the findings of the research of historical records with the scientific test results to confirm their lineage. Some people search the scriptures.

We know the Hebrew patriarch Abraham had many sons and that God promised him that his descendants would be innumerable.  One of his sons was Ishmael born to him by Hagar, the Egyptian slave, who served as a surrogate mother for Sarah, his wife.

The Ishmaelites were, are, or should be the descendants of Ishmael. For genealogy purposes, this matter seems pretty cut and dry. But who are the true Ishmaelites?

History is a topic that almost anybody can write about, if they know what they're talking about, and make it extremely interesting and informative for other people (like me) who have no knowledge of the facts whatsoever.

One of the blogs I like or follow is The Freelance History Writer, published by history lover, Ms. Susan Abernethy.  She started out writing about women's history and then decided to diversify.

Ms. Abernathy's love for this subject was recognized and appreciated by a reputable non-profit organization, and she was asked to write a guest post for them. She holds the honor of being the first guest blogger for Ancient History Encyclopedia. The title of her guest post is Scota: Mother of the Scottish People.  At her own blog this post was tagged “DNA analysis”.

  • Do you know who discovered that DNA could be categorized into 7 basic groups?
  • What do you know about "Lia Fail"?

This historical adventure really took me places.
Thanks Ms. Abernathy!  :)

Entertainment: Music: Throwback: Randy Crawford ~ Everything Must Change

"Everything Must Change" is a timeless classic. - In life, everybody sings this song, if they live.

"Everything Must Change" is one of those songs that if an artist dares to mess this up when performing it, there will be no forgiveness for sins. Nope!! The song police will be called by me and I will demand that they are arrested! STOPPED!!!

* Randy Crawford – who could never sing any song in a way that would displease anybody – sang this song and stamped it in my memory. Nobody has a voice like this woman.

* My husband found a rendition by the late but still awesomely great Nina Simone.

* Found a duet performance with the inimitably soulful Chaka Khan and unquestionably soulful Simply Red.

They can all relax. Will not have to call the song police for any of them.

Entertainment: Music: Throwback: I Don't Wanna Fight ~ Tina Turner

I admire Tina Turner. She was a strong soul sista. There came a time in her life when she was a “turning point”. She is a role model for women who are in abusive relationships. She shows them what they need to do. Especially if children are involved. I liked this song because I can feel Tina's heart and soul in it when she sings it. Her heart was bleeding and she knew the best way was to just move on. She picked up the pieces and walked off!!

In my opinion, “All the Best – The Hits” and “Simply the Best” are her “best”!

She is retired now and for your information, she performed her last concert in Austin, Texas, my current hometown.  I did not attend but according to those who did, she was Tina Turner all the way to the end!!  :)

Little Known Black History Fact: Lee Wesley Gibson and Ben Isaacs

Mr. Gibson or “George” passed away at the age of 107 and is noted in the records as the oldest surviving member of the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters.

Ben Isaacs dies at 107; oldest Pullman porter

  • Obituary published August 18, 2012 in LA Times: Excerpt:  “Records kept by the A. Philip Randolph Pullman Porter Museum in Chicago had recognized 102-year-old Lee Wesley Gibson of Los Angeles as being the oldest living Pullman porter until Isaacs — born five years earlier than Gibson — came forward in 2010.”

Originally posted on Majic 102.1:
At 101 years old, Lee Wesley Gibson of Keatchie, Louisiana is the oldest surviving member of the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters. Gibson served as a pullman porter for 38 years. Back in the day, the job of pullman porter was considered a middle-class position, something Gibson, who was raised by a poor single mom, took pride in.

It doesn't matter.  The fact is that both men are in the records and both deserve to be remembered because we all need to be REMINDED that they were unique individual men who each had a name.  THEIR OWN NAME!  A name that some guy couldn't be bothered with learning.  What was that guy's name?  I know he had a name.  Sadly, people don't remember his name fondly.

Investing Advice: Real Estate Investment Trusts: A Primer

Always an old year out and a new year in and many assess and reassess their current financial situation.  Most are hoping the coming year will be better.   Looking for a practical investment vehicle for the upcoming new year?

Have you considered REITs (Real Estate Investment Trusts)?

  • September 14, 2010, marked the 50th anniversary of the U.S. REIT industry.

  • President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed legislation in 1960 creating REITs.

The legislation combined the best attributes of real estate and stock-based investment and placed investments in large-scale income-producing real estate properties within the reach of the small investor.

This made it possible for average investors to invest in REITs in the same way they invested in other industries, i.e. through the purchase of equity-type units. The investor's ownership of real estate is divided into various "units", the value of a unit being a portion of the value of the property/properties owned by the REIT.

REITs are investment vehicles, classified as:

  • equity (EREIT - where a company buys, owns and manages income-generating properties like apartments, shopping malls, buildings with offices, etc.);

  • mortgage (MREIT - which either loan money for mortgages to real estate owners or purchase existing mortgages or MBS (mortgage-backed-securities; also known as "mortgage pass-through."); or

  • hybrid (a portfolio of equity and mortgage REITs combined).

REITs are a means of allowing investors to directly participate in the higher returns generated by real estate properties because, in essence, they own a "piece" of property/properties in the trust.

REITs can be publicly or privately held; however, typically REIT units are publicly quoted and traded, similarly to mutual funds. NAREIT, the National Association of Real Estate Investment Trusts, categorizes REITs as publicly traded, private, and non-exchange traded. Public REITs are registered with the SEC (Securities and Exchange Commission) and traded in major stock exchanges just like shares of common stock in other companies are listed and traded. By contrast, private REITs are not registered or traded with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). Non-exchange traded REITs are registered with the SEC but not traded on any of the public exchanges.

Two main IRS requirements for REITs are: (1) a company must have most of its assets and income tied to real estate investment, and (2) that company must distribute at least 90 percent of its taxable income to its shareholders yearly. If a company qualifies as a REIT, it can deduct dividends paid to its unit-holders (or shareholders) from its corporate taxable income, and consequently, owe no corporate tax. Applicable taxes will be paid by the unit-holders. Furthermore, in line with IRS treatment, most states do not require REITs to pay state income tax.

REITs may have originated in the US, but the concept has spread around the world. There are Asian and European countries with REIT legislation. The Australian REIT market is the largest in Asia. (REITs are called LPTs there.) However, the US still boasts the largest REIT market.

Regardless of the host of issues adversely impacting the real estate market currently, REITs are still an easy convenient means for the average investor to invest in high-value income-producing property and other areas of real estate that would otherwise be totally inaccessible to them, because they simply do not have the funds to buy and sell properties in their own. REITs, as a sub-component of the financial industry, have become and will likely remain an integral segment of the economy.

REIT shares clearly can benefit most investors, whether value-driven or growth-oriented, individual or institutional. They offer the benefits of ongoing current income, with the potential for long-term capital appreciation that historically has met or exceeded inflation.

They are equities that derive a large part of their value from tangible, hard assets and the effective management of those assets.

They have been proven to bring the benefits of balance, diversification and greater risk/reward efficiency to a broad range of investment portfolios."

REITs Still Serve Their Legislative Intent
- Whether the real estate market is in crisis or stable, REITs serve their legislative intent, i.e. they are a means or method for the small investor aka "Joe the plumber", to invest in commercial real estate.

This article is just an introduction; a primer. NAREIT®, the National Association of Real Estate Investment Trusts®, the "voice for REITs" continues to supply significant news and reports affecting the real estate investment world, and more specifically REIT investors.

3 Famous Ghost Ships and Their Interesting Stories

The most famous ghost ship is the Flying Dutchman, which I knew nothing about other than the fact there was a vessel by that name and there was a movie made about it, set sail in 1680 and the first time it was spotted was about 200 years later and various more sightings ever since. Sounds believable!

HUBPages Contributor Teresa Coppens tells the stories behind The Flying Dutchman and three other ships: the Mary Celeste, the Octavius, and the Caleuche.

Famous Ghost Ships

- According to legend, the Mary Celeste was found abandoned, the crew disappeared and the only trace they left behind was their last meal. An unexplained mystery to this very day. But there is no shortage of theories.

- The Octavius left London in 1761 with the goal of transporting cargo to China. The intended destination was reached but on the return voyage, the ship got stuck in the Arctic ice because the captain thought he could take a shortcut to get back to England. Discovered thirteen years later. Guess where the vessel AND the entire crew were found?

- The story of the Caleuche is a legend in Chilota mythology. There are water spirits (with cute names: Sirena Chilota, Pincoya and Picoy), a ship with a mind of its own, lost shipwrecked souls brought back to life to party with music and laughter, kidnapped fishermen who have to serve the happy people, warlocks, and sorcerers allowed to come on board but not permitted to mess with the partying passengers. The people of southern Chile may truly believe it, but unbelievers like me would say the tales are loaded with the stuff of Halloween.

Famous Ghost Ships

Ghost ships bring to mind vessels materializing from a fog shrouded ocean. These ships represent a number of mysterious possibilites: manifestation of a tragedy that befell the crew of a long ago vessel; vessels found floating without crew, all hands on board missing and a mysterious tale begging to explain the tragedy.

I am also a HUBPages Contributor using the pen name "cmoneyspinner1tf". My HUB tells the stories of lost ships.  Not ghost ships.  These vessels were lost but then found.

Cake Bake: Stewart versus Esteves - Throw Down!

American TV personality Martha Stewart is the most famous housekeeper / homemaker in the world. I would describe her as a “Phenomenal Businesswoman par Excellence”. Watched one of her shows one time and she was actually teaching her audience how to clean a dirty greasy frying pan! This woman took the mundane chores of housekeeping and homemaking on a Star Trek journey and boldly went places no woman had ever gone before. To the bank!!!
  • Martha Stewart's net worth at one time was reported at $300 million, per celebritynetworth.com. (Figured that must be an old report. So fished some more.)
  • A 2011 article published by abcnews.go.com, reported that Forbes.com reported her net worth at $638 million. (That's probably understated too, as of 2015.)

Anyway, getting to my real point - If you're not into baking from scratch like Martha Stewart, are you aware of the wonderful things that can be done with a cake mix? Isabelle Esteves shares her tips on how to enhance a basic cake mix.*

* NOTE: Ms. Esteves unpublished her content.  The replacement link is to another food blog.

Ms. Stewart teaches you how to make all sorts of wonderful culinary delights on from scratch on her Martha Bakes TV series. But why do that when the family and friends chowing down on my upside-down cake won't even notice the difference? Stewart versus Esteves? I'm in the Esteves corner.

Society and Culture: The Olympics is Proof of Peace in Diversity

Doves have come to be known as a recognized universal symbol for peace in many cultures.

The releasing of doves was done first at the 1896 Olympics held in Athens, Greece

It was only fitting that the 100th Anniversary of this tradition be highlighted at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta, GA, USA.  Atlanta, as most students of American history know, was the Confederate Center in Georgia where several engagements of the Civil War were fought.  But that was the 60s (1861-65).

One decade, we’re fighting like cats and dogs with each other, hooping and hollering about secession; and just 30 years later we are off to Greece, and the United States, emphasis on the word “united” was representing!

Because, in the end, all that we all really do want is … world peace.

Entertainment History: Gene Kelly was a Heart Throb

Have always loved Gene Kelly (1912 - 1996). The dancer with muscles like Popeye the Sailor.  According to the Urban Dictionary (which I'm now finding myself referring to as often as Merriam Webster), this is the Top Definition of a "heartthrob":

A person of superior physical quality who inspires amorous emotions of the opposite sex.
Yep! That would be Gene Kelly! Loved this guy!!

Gene Kelly

Enviously watching him dance effortlessly with all his leading ladies and Jerry Mouse, and adoring him dancing all by himself in the rain.

He created such wonderful childhood memories for me.

Have to save this tweet, share this video, and also sharing a link to a site for loyal fans, aptly named Gene Kelly Fans.

Entertainment Blogs: World Music - the Music Journey

Do you enjoy world music? So do I. I used to work in our nation's capital, Washington, D.C. There were two music stores within walking distance from my job, and they were a favorite place to spend my one hour for lunch break. Haven't been in D.C. since 1995 and the name of the stores escape me. But I do remember that they both had a wonderful world music section. In Texas, when we used to subscribe to cable TV, there was a show called “Musical Passport” that we watched often. Took you all around the world showcasing great music!

Currently, I work from home so I don't get out much to browse the stores anymore. Also, we no longer have cable TV. Sure I could shop online but don't always know who to look for. My significant other combs YouTube and finds all kinds of new artists. But I don't have the patience to do that. I have, however, stumbled across a blog that specializes in introducing its readers to musical artists from around the world: Germany, Greece, Mali, South Africa, Canada, Hungary, France, Caribbean and on and on and on. You can search this site by names of artists, by countries and/or by genres. As of March 2017, it had over 4000 followers. Their posts date back to 2011. The last post is dated December 2015.  They have so much variety, it makes me dizzy. But I love it!! Why don't you visit? If you love world music, you'll love this blog!
